Default FDX--You Know It's Going to Be a Long Trip When...

You know it's going to be a long trip when your captain shows up wearing an old-school style airline pilot hat with the little cap condom protecting it from the rain we had in Mempho last night.

What is up with that?? Why in the world would you wear a hat IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO????

No Hat Fred

Seems like it's mostly bald guys that like the hats but I agree with you, why would anybody that doesn't HAVE to wear a hat want to?

Picket practice?

Or, maybe that's where they keep their small rodents.

Forget Bald - That isn't it. It tells me a lot about a someone when they wear a hat. A lot of us have had to wear that thing in other jobs, and there is NO WAY to convince me that anyone wears that annoying thing without it being all about IMAGE!

Can you imagine wasting your time going to get the hat or care enough about the thing to buy a cover --- let alone keep track of it getting on and off the plane?

OK, while I agree that hat wearing is mostly about ones image of ones self, there are exceptions. Not many, but exceptions none the less. We have one well known, infamous, pilot whose been on the payroll since before dirt, who continues to wear his hat. Years ago, while on a BOS-EWR-BOS week long trip with him, I asked him about why he wore his hat. He got very serious and told me that he wore it in memory of, and to honor, one of his heros. I told him that Bugs Bunny was in fact not dead, and that he could thusly elect to not wear the hat anymore. Needless to say, we didn't talk a lot for the rest of that trip. Point being, unless you know the actual reason why someone wears a hat, perhaps you shouldn't judge so harshly. And just be thankful that you don't have to wear one.

Hat story:

I was a new hire here sitting in the AOC waiting to JS home. I look at the trip folder next to me and the flight time is around 9 hours.... Being a new SO I was very impressed and spent the next few minutes talking to the almighty 11 FO. Up comes the Capt... wearing a hat. I hear the FO introduce himself - "Hi I'm Joe bag of donuts" and the Capt responds with "I'm Capt XXXX." The FO turns to me and asks if I want the trip. I laughed so hard I nearly peed myself.

It's amazing how quickly you can tell what kind of trip it's going to be. Very funny.

Amen. I've hated the darned things since my army days and steel pots. But to each his own. I can think of a couple of people who wear their lids but are still good guys. I don't think I've ever seen one of our ladies wearing a hat.

If they say, "I'm going to go over a few things" before they even look at the release, you know it's gonna be wild.

One time on a MEM-NRT run the captain (he's infamous) gathered all three f/o's together at the counter to explain how to run the FMS - no abeam points, no VOR radials, etc.... Also no chewing gum in the cockpit. This before we've even spent a minute getting to know each other. Priceless...

By the way the Subic guys used to wear hats during contract talks. I thought it was a good idea.
