Cant help you with that. Story was relayed to me from another person. I tried to edit the post to reflect that since it was not clear but cannot edit so I will ask that it be removed since it is second hand information. It was not my intention to be finger pointing at any of the fine folks in dispatch.

I will ask that it be removed, my apologies......

Oddly enough I have not yet received and static when asking for extra fuel especially international, but other than HKG-ANC OR PVG-ANC we don't haul the glamor loads so that's likely why. A couple of weeks ago however ANC-ONT (LIDO flight planned at CI555-that's hecka fast to you DC-8 types) I started getting behind just south of SEA. We were at planned weight with a pretty favorable CG (unusual for the MD because they're scared of putting it on it's tail since UPS is too cheap to by nose tie downs like Fed Ex uses). So I ACARS Ft. Fumble (or Clown Town or Jerry's Kids or whatever you call them) and tell them I'm WAY over burn and may well be dropping into OAK or MHR for gas, whichever suits them better, but in the meantime I'm slowing down to see if I got any help. Oh boy...you'd think I hit on a guy's cousin/fiance at a Kentucky family reunion (wedding) suggesting a divert. Keeping it more cordial I stayed on ACARS instead of the SATCOM (always trying to save a buck) and informed them the only opinion I was asking for was their preference of OAK or MHR and that the decision was mine and my F/O's alone. Fortunately for them and our happy hour slowing down really helped and we got a nice direct so it all worked out. We landed only 5000 light but I did write up a vague suspicion of a possible fuel leak in respect of the next guys flying the airplane.

As far as how stupid they are, no doubt. But all other things held constant I'll do what I can to save gas out of common professional sense, and to do what I can to help save a junior guy's job along with enjoying my days off.

"Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those I had to kill because they ****ed me off."

I think its the job of every professional pilot to fly this most efficent jet as possible and I think most of us do. The other day we saved 5000#'s by just climbing 430 instead of the 380 that they had us planned for. Lido is a good planning tool but its doesn't take the place of sound airmanship. Having said that, I think more people would be inclined to save more if there were some small incentive attached for the effort. Example. You save them 3000#'s above what lido has you getting in with, about 500 gallons right? Doable on every flight international flight! 500 times 4 dollars a gallon = 2 grand right (if my public math is correct) How about 15% of that 2k for the crews effort or 300 bucks for the crew or a hundred bucks each. The company saves 1700 and the crew is happy. Multiply that times 300 flights a day I come up 510K a day for the company times 365 I come up with 186 million a year. I know this a bit outside the box but this is real savings that can start tomorrow. Why don't we do it??? I am near the bottom of the list and don't want to be without a job. Am I smoking something wicked or just been up commuting home from PVG and been up for almost 36 hours?
While I am on my box I want to share one other thing. One thing I can't deal with is the attitude that says, F*&K this place, I owe them nothing, its not my job to save this place any money. I think there are some out there that would rather see our company fail and go bust than for it to continue to profit. All I know is that, if "F" letter does goes out its not their address that letter is mailed too. Okay I am done now.

I'm not being brain washed or am drinking kool aid - I simply think that if possible saving a few bucks here and there might be good for our future... Am I an idealist or are you a fatalist?
I guess I left out that the APU gas is more than paid for by beating LIDO, not normally a challenge, except when going to Mecca. Another curious side effect is that we get to the sort or the hotel faster, and still save gas...

Great concept. How much fuel would you be able to save by shutting engines down enroute, or simply dead sticking airplanes into the airport from FL 350. That's what would happen if you give pilots incentive to make money by saving gas..
