Actually, it's not a deal breaker. I know several folks that don't have any degree that got hired (not even counting USAF Devry campus in C-springs. or the satellite campus at Annapolis. ) Most don't volunteer that info though, so it's not common knowledge. That being said, it does make your path much more difficult.
We do get quite desperate for pro instructors from time to time. That would seem to me the best way for you to insinuate yourself into the flight department.
It's all cyclical, when we are desperate for pilots the requirements get much softer. Right now, not so much.

Guess I R
Brown doesn't 'do' anything for me.
"ALL the 'majors' -and other good places to work". .You needed to ask?
I only jumped in because you gave me the shot by asserting "ALL the 'majors' -and other good places to work, ABSOLUTELY required the 4 year degree from 'an accredited institution' to even be considered for an interview." Unless of course you consider UPS to fall outside this criteria

No. . . but I do have a few 'buds' who took the wrong fork in the road, not knowing how badly they treat their people before getting onboard. Of course, you really can't blame some of them, because no one else was hiring at the time.
Over the years I have also heard horror stories from my local Brown drivers, too.
Look. . working at FedEx or UPSchuck is FAR better than our what our peers, who are getting the sheite sandwich and taking it in the shorts, are getting at 'the majors'.
Over the long run, retirement from either is going to be better for the individual than if they had invested their life at UAL or DAL or NWAL.
If one had the choice between Purple or Brown (now I am biased) . . it would be Purple, hands down. Not for money -or rig -or lifestyle. But, for the way you are treated by your overlords.
The company (FedEx) was founded on the concept; "People, Service Profit". Some might take issue about how the motto has been twisted around over the years, but, from what I hear, FedEx IS a MUCH more "people friendly" place to work than the Dark Side.
