Ah, but they do own you. FOM 2.24 prohibits ANY "commercial flying" except FedEx. Flying on the side, without specific authorization would violate the FOM.

You're right. They don't own you. What they do own, by virtue of both the FOM and more importantly, the FAR's is your commercial flying. If you were to only fly for FedEx and because you always fly extra (just an example), when you reached 1000 hours in a year, you would be done flying. As well, if you were flying, commercially, as a side gig, you're still limited to the 1000 hours in a year, but now, you'd not be able to legally provide your services to FedEx for the full 1000 hours. At least that's how I interpret it.

Regarding the remuneration or compensation part of it,although you may not be exercising the privledges afforded by your commercial certificate, unless you can rent the bird to get current on, it can likely be construed (by the company, not the FARs) as being "commercial flying". With that said, and being junior of the junior, I've done what has needed to be done to ensure continuity of household income should life here at purple change for the worse.
