WOW!... but NOT surprised.

Years ago I had the opportunity to shoot the breeze with a Russian IL76 crew overseas. If anyone has seen the movie "Das Boot" with the bananas hanging from the piping and every nook and cranny crammed with junk... well that's what the inside of that thing looked like.

It was all hand loaded... no pallets, no forklifts, no weighing of anything. Floor to ceiling it was packed with "stuff" destined for the Russian black market. Reminded me of a pirate ship with wings. I wouldn't be surprised if that thing was overloaded by 50k... or worse! A few years ago one of them was so overloaded departing Kinshasa (old Zaire... now Dem Rep of Congo)... it crashed off the end of the rwy and took out several hundred people. The crew survived the impact but were beaten to death by the angry villagers.

There's at least a couple of accidents where "the aircraft had extreme difficulty becoming airborne and crashed shortly thereafter...".

I'd hate to be on the one where the cargo door blew open at FL330 "ejecting at least 140 occupants from the plane."

 

The tower controller said something about "what the passengers thought of that"?

I saw this clip several months ago and all this time I thought it was a freighter.

 

some IL76 operator had one recently crash on take off in Lake Victoria in Africa......
