Divide and conquer!

On a serious note, I see no correlation between debt and unification, but maybe that's just me

This guy may be smart, but I think he's just enhancing his own academic position by telling some rooskies what they want hear

- There are no divisive issues here in the US which evoke emotions strong enough to incite actual violence amongst the mainstream population. (Unlike the civil war)

- There are no divisive issues which overwhelmingly correspond to geography. (unlike the civil war)

- The president elect appears to be serious about his campaign promises of unity.

- The US military is EXTREMELY homogeneous. I can comfortably say that we will not allow a break-up of the US (Unlike the civil war, in which west point graduates split about 50-50). Without a faction of the US military supporting them, what break-away group could possibly succeed?

- As far as outside forces are concerned...the US military controls our strategic forces, including a fully-operational missile defense system. Nobody would dare try it.

The whole idea is ludicrous.

I think the Texas Republic sounds like fun! Probably good national cuisine too.

How does something like this make the WSJ. He clearly failed in his studies; first rule of the professional military officer--know your enemy. He clearly does not.

I'm not sure how it made the WSJ, but have seen references to it all over the web. Sensational stuff travels fast. Probably this page will show up in a google search on the subject at some point.
Kind of interesting though, seems a somewhat logical way for the Prof. to gain notoriety while dredging up old Soviet style nostalgia and anti U.S. sentiment at the same time.
Also interesting to think about how much, or little people overseas know about our country.
An implausible, yet somewhat logical extension perhaps if all they've seen the last few years is talk of "Red" and "Blue" States, Conservatives versus Liberals, and ethnic and social "unrest"?
Also seems some worldwide sentiment that the U.S. caused the current economic problems facing the globe.

Not much news for the WSJ around the first of the year, so they found a "perfect storm" of a filler story. It has all the best of everything: weak economy, US will collapse, Soviets/Russians/KGB will swoop in.

Consider this..... Panarin is 50. He is dean of the Russian Foreign Ministry's academy for future diplomats. He is close to the central party, but not there yet. So, eight years ago, he dreams up a make or break way to get INTO the inner circle: tell everybody the USA will fail in 2010. That year is important because Panarin will be 52:. If his prediction comes true (even a year or two later), he will be hailed for his wisdom, and, being seasoned, but not too old, wlecomed to the central party.

Talk amungst yourselves.
