Shhh!
[quote=R1200RT;636583]We moved here 3 years ago and looked all over Germantown, and Collierville, then we drove down to Olive Branch and bought there. The neighborhood is great and my wife loves it. You'll save about 200K and get a bigger lot. The strange thing about it, we don't have any of the porblems that most places in Memphis have and I'm 13 miles from the parking lot (closer than Collierville). We moved here from the DFW area and the folks in the shops and restaruants in Olive Branch look like the same folks in Dallas. The guy behind me owned the local Sonic and he said he couldn't get kids from Memphis to work in MS that they were scared of the police in MS.. and he said "for good reason"
My wife and a neighbor saw a Memphis "hood" car drive in the subdivision and 5 minutes later a cop came in too. 10 min later the cop was following the car out. If you move give Olive Branch a look...]
Hush yo' mouth--like we need one more unmarried FedEx pilot 'round heah to beguile our wives & daughters!

You guys crack me up...
We have been in Memphis for 10 years now. It has its problems, but it is far from being the festering hole that some paint it to be. It seems that the ones that complain the loudest don't even live in the city. If you have a good attitude and know where to go and where not to go, it really does have a lot to offer. Here's my take on the area.
Gtown/Colleriville-Whitey tighty burbs pretty standard if you like that..
Ditto for Olive branch and some parts of Southhaven except with more of a Redneck "charm" and income tax (your better off in TN if you make more that 80K assuming a 250K house).
Hernando is a smaller MS town..nice place, but a bit far out from anything but lakes and deer for us (also more MS "charm")
Cordova just got anexed so alot of the White folks are fleein, Lots of instability in house prices and schools there.
Bartlett and lakeland are also ok.
Inside the loop East Memphis is nice but expensive Look south of Sam cooper and North of Southern. High point terrace is nice.
Working west there is a nice area around the U of M on either side of Central ave, Moderately priced Bungalows lots of kids and if you stay inside 1 mile from the Univ you are inside the zone for the Campus school (best elementary school in the entire metro area including burbs..and free! Look it up)
Cooper/Young is ok but have an open and tolerant mind. Good place to party.
Central gardens Is beautiful, But I personally would go to Evergreen District next to Overton Park instead. Same types of houses, access to the park and zoo for biking/running, restraunts and bars inside the neighborhood and cheaper to boot.
Downtown is cool, Harbor Town is basically burbs downtown, I personally would look at South Bluffs or South Main area. Downtown Elementary is also a very good school.
The Memphis Schools are open/optional so no matter where you live you can get your kids into the good ones if you stand in line.
If you are one to ***** and moan about everything and not get involved in the solutions then the burbs are for you and you will fit right in If you are not scared of black people and enjoy being in a diverse and vibrant lifestyle then give the city a try..

Just left C'Ville after a scant two years there. Moved back to Destin, FL and my wife is a changed person. I will grudgingly admit that I'm much happier, too. If you decide to do it, though, I'd avoid C'ville. It's about boring as h3ll.

Wow,
Not involved in the solutions? We've been living in the planet for 8 years and ARE involved in the community. I had to stop my wife's involvement at one of the inner city schools after a few too many shootings (since she's not allowed to pack in a school). Plenty of us are involved and trying to fight the tide of criminality. It's still a craphole.
Hey, eyes wide open. Living and flying out of Memphis is great. Get an apartment and have a blast. But Mr. Good Beer is dreaming. I've also lived all over the country and NEVER seen such a ****hole.
I find the "whitey-tighty burbs" and "scared of black people" crack pretty offensive. The only race involved is the race out of inner city Memphis.
Memphis is one of the most dangerous cities in the country - for black AND white people. A few months ago I walked 5 miles through NYC by myself, half of it at night, with out a single problem. Try that in mid-town Memphis. I personally know people who have been robbed at gunpoint and shot and left for dead.

As a student of the human condition, I have carefully recorded my observations over the past few years, and have come to the following conclusion: Mempus apologists generally fall into one or more of the following categories:
1) "I'm from here!"
2) "I'd bid ANC/LAX/SFS/CAN/CDG in a heartbeat; Wife says no ********** way!"
3) "I'm too junior to bid anything else, but I like Memphis! No sh!t!"
It's like a clown on fire; it's kinda funny, but kinda sad.
