I still can recall the graphs we saw in '98 that showed 2004 with the caveat that they "may" have to keep some until 2006. There was no way around it as the emissions were the problem and the EPA wouldn't let us fly it past that time..

I can remember a 1987(?) Aviation Week article discussing FedEx's new A300's. It said it was FedEx's intention to retire 2 727's for every A300 received? I guess that didn't happen?
More recently I read that the 757 was going to be the 727 replacement? According to Capt. "O", it now seems to be an A310 replacement instead?
Maybe some future A380 order will end up being the 727 replacement?

Today in the Senate there is a bill to make commercial airlines have more efficient jets by 12-31-12 so as to save the planet of harmful greenhouse gases.
There was no mention of Congress and Pelosi relinquishing there jets and fly first class to reduce their carbon footprint.

I am not saying the cleaner engines shouldn't be a desire, but don't airplanes only contribute 2-3% of green house emissions. I read an article regarding airplane emissions. The airlines have an desire too for efficient, clean airplanes. Helps their image as environmentally respsonible, and their bottom line. But the conclusion was, if this stuff is mandated by law, it could be a disaster for the airlines.
By the way, I am going to miss the Rumble of the 727/DC-9 and their smoke trails on final.

But, that's not really important. What I think we need to focus on, is if the retirement of the 727s is going to cause us to have too many pilots. We have somewhere around 300 guys listed as 727 S/Os after the latest system bid. Of course, that could be cancelled at any moment.

The 757 seems be a A310 replacement too. Talking to various MX guys, the 310-200s are MX pigs. The Chief Pilot said that the 757s are the most efficient airplane currently for the domestic system.
I am sure a 757 guy can answer better.

What is the the bill called. Hadn't heard this one. What a way to kill the airline industry. Make an industry, that is an economic failure as a whole, invest in new equipment. All this following a horrible recession and high gas prices. Brilliant!

I am sure their will be plenty of "green" jobs to make up for it.

Current conversion rate is 1.5/month (average). There are 2 simulators (located at Pan Am on T&B Blvd in Memphis. 3rd sim is on the way.
Aircraft is absolutely a fuel saving machine. Cruises at 380 to 410 at .80 with 45,000 pounds of freight burning a miserly 3300 per side. After coming off the 727, I had to recalibrate my thinking about fuel remaining versus distance to go.
