How to get on at FedEx
#11
Now, I think this guy is absolutely smoking crack. I do think my friend can do it, and make it to FedEx, but I believe it's gonna take at least 12 years. He has just begun flight training and thinks he's going to be flying purple 777's pretty soon cuz his neighbor will get him on. My question's are:
How difficult is it to get on at FedEx? I've heard you have to have 3 people (who have flown with you at a 121 carrier/military) recommend you.
In this competitive market the more the better but ONE LOR from a current pilot is the minimum. I am former corporate pilot, never flew 121 or military so it is not a requirement
Second, if you do get an interview, what are your chances? 50%? 80%? Assuming you do fine and aren't a psycho.
If you get an interview at FedEx the job only yours to lose meaning your hired unless you give them a reason NOT to hire you, so the percentage is very high
Knowing what know about the industry it is REALLY hard for me to encourage any person to try to make a living as an airline pilot. The glory days, IMHO, are long gone. Pilots are treated as nothing more than a number on the corporate payroll (at best) and the benefits really don't outweigh the consequences of being gone so much from home.
Best of luck to you and your friend

I was a regional captain and had a CAL 777 check airman give me his card and tell me he would get me a job. Didn't even get an interview but it all worked out.

once you get an interview purple has a very high hire rate. for example 11 of 12 (5 of 6 one day and 6 of 6 the other) people in my interview group were hired in late 05. i think that's fairly typical but since it's probably going to be at least four years between the last class and the next things may or may not change.
The answer was 80% of those who are invited to interview get hired....and over half of the 20% who don't make it are "self eliminated" via sub-par performance during the basic sim check.
Thus, when you get called for the interview...turn off all the automation and practice basic instrument flying...get the gouge on the sim...and practice the profile over and over in a sim (if possible).
I believe the hardest part at FEDEX is getting the "meet-n-greet" and getting the interview.

So I'm a regional guy for several years, waiting for the upgrade. Been a goal of mine to get on with you guys, but this isn't about me. A guy I know wants to be an airline pilot. He is around 22. His neighbor is a FedEx captain and tells him:
1)just get all your ratings (as if it'll take 3 weeks)
2)get on with a regional for a couple years
3)i'll get you on at fedex

I know hiring is a long way off for everyone, and I don't want to burst this kids bubble, but I would like to give him some realistic advise. Thanks.

Tell the kid to go the JetJock route: Get hired at UPS first, then FedEx will love to have him so HR can do the neee, nnnnneee, nee thing <BFG>
Seriously, Be realistic, but encourage the FedEx dream. Share that it is yours also, and that you still believe you will be at FedEx.
I really disliked the dream thieves in my life and still admire the ones who encouraged even distant dreams well pursued understanding the risks. Calvin Coolidge and Persistence and all....

First, how old is this guy's neighbor? Is he 45 or pushing 65?! By the time he has his hours and quals, the guy could be long gone. Nonetheless, he needs to use this guy to meet other FDX guys. Like others said before, you have to have the numbers - and make it PIC time, not SIC - and then you need to either know someone with pull or enough guys to give you recommendations. He needs to cultivate the neighbor and become his best little pool boy or yard boy. But he needs to meet and get to know other guys on the line unless this guy is in management!
We have had a few mid-20s new hire wonders, but they were all "special." Still, 10 years and on with FDX in your mid 30s is a great deal.
