Default Purple Poolies Class Dates

There are many of us in the pool and I am sure that I speak for all that we are all eager to begin our careers with FedEx.

Would any of you like to share your thoughts about future hiring?

Thanks...

Whale

Pure speculation...I have NO inside information and just making an outside guesstimate based on basic manning and retirements...

Now with the disclaimer out of the way....

I think that if the 777's keep arriving on schedule and if the economy truly stabilizes and starts to rebound (which we are currently starting to seeing) then I think we might drain the pool and start interviewing by fall of 2010. So basically a year from now.

Again, just an uneducated guess. Good luck.

It is anyone's guess!

Here are the relevant factors:

1. Retirements (or lack therefore of)
2. Flag Ops
3. Exiting 4a2b (Company cannot hire while operating in this mode)

We have a higher % of over 60 age pilots here than any other airline. The 250 retirements expected per year is NOT coming to fruition.

5 years after the enactment of the Age 65 Law would be a best guess for hiring....

Sorry, but 2010 is just too optimistic to see bodies on property.

Lindy,

I was thinking that #2 would cause the end of #3 and result in possible pool draining....

Has anyone considered this ???

Thanks for the input.

Whale,

There is a rumor that a significant number of pilots will retire from purple this year. Flag ops might be a player too. Some say new rest rules may come out. None of these is certain.

What I can say is certain is hiring will be preceded by vacancy bid, probably two or three, and you will hear about it here. You will have to hear that 150 SOs are moving out of the cheap seat to anticipate hiring.

I agree with Gunter on this....

Also, contract negotiations this year....the company needs to give the pilots a sense of euphoria to vote any contract in.

To obtain this euphoric attitude, the pilots MUST see seat progression (the 150 S/Os moving to a window seat) and increased BLGs.

Until we routinely have BLGs consistently 4 hrs ++ the contractual (per month), FDX will not hire.

When we talk about VACANCY Bids, Professionals moving over, and increased BLGs, then the company will think about hiring. This is easily 18 - 24 months from now.

We have enough bodies to cover Flag Ops, especially if the optimizer is turned down!

I think hiring is a minimum of 1 year away and probably 2 (obviously just my guess). But there is improving news....although flights have been reduced, loads are rising considerably according to our Ops folks and they've been scrambling for lift and crews lately. Hopefully we'll see the rumors about a bunch of retirements in the next couple of months come true as well. Lotsa factors in play but we're definitely moving in the right direction. good luck.

I have no inside info.

I think hiring will start in summer of 2010 or summer of 2011

Watch the FAA fatigue rules. That could be huge. How do you hub tun on a 9 hour duty period, or even 11 hours we would need more pilots.

Of course Oberstar could negate those gains with the FAA reorg/labor laws.

Wouldn't the company save money by offering those of senior pay to retire with some sort of incentive to place new pilots at a much cheaper rate per hour?

FDX is not interested in any type of incentive to retire. It is actually cheaper to keep the over 60 guys on property. While they earn the highest wages (and have the most vacation, etc), they also don't collect retirement. Those that have maxed out years for retirement (25 years) are working for 1/2 pay. Not bad paying someone 120K to fly captain.
