I believe you have to wait until you're 60, or when you become eligible for Medicare.

I'm not smart enough to figure-out if you have coverage options, but here is the page I looked on to help answer your question:

http://www.tricare.mil/mybenefit/hom...rveAndFamilies

You might also try calling the TriCare folks at one of these numbers (depending on where you live):

TRICARE uses several different contractors to administer your benefits--health care, pharmacy and dental--around the world. Because there is no "single" customer service number for everything you need, we've organized the customer service numbers below in one place to make them easier for you to find.

HealthNet Federal Services, LLC
(North Region) 1.877.874.2273
Humana Military Healthcare Services, Inc.
(South Region) 1.800.444.5445
TriWest Healthcare Alliance
(West Region) 1.888.874.9378

NGAUS and others are pushing legislation to cover those so-called "gray area" retirees...folks who have retired from the Guard but have not yet reached age 60.

Lots of stuff on the web and the NGAUS website.....

S.1390 Markup Joins H.R.2647 in Authorizing TRICARE for Gray Area Retirees
In a continuing successful effort from NGAUS, our members, and political allies, the Senate Armed Services Committee included in their mark of the NDAA, S.1390, the provisions of S.731 that would authorize all Gray Area Retirees (Reserve Component retirees who have not attained the age of 60) and their families, now only eligible to receive Reserve retirement pay and TRICARE at age 60, to purchase TRICARE Standard (TRS) coverage at a premium equal to the full cost of coverage to the Department of Defense as determined by the Secretary of Defense on an actuarial basis. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has reported this bill to be "budget neutral." Based on the current TRS rates being 28% of actual costs, the full cost to DOD for TRICARE Standard that would be charged to retirees under H.R.270 and S.731 would be $169.68 for individuals and $643.46 for families.
A similar provision is already in the House version of the NDAA so this has a great chance of becoming law.

Default Pending Legislation, Part Deux

Received this from NGAUS about 10 days ago....

House-Senate Agreement on 2010 Defense Authorization Bill

On Wednesday, the House and Senate Conferees reached a deal on H.R. 2647, the Fiscal Year 2010 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Both the full House and Senate are expected to approve the deal shortly. H.R. 2647 contains a number of helpful provisions to the Guard, including:

- Extends eligibility for TRICARE Standard to reserve retirees who have not yet reached the age of 60, commonly referred to as "TRICARE for Grays" (Sec. 705)

I don't know, you would have to ask Rush and Sean. But sure anything that doesn't actually hurt anyone is probably good defense spending. Why don't we read saul alinski and see what your side thinks. Please note I did not say tricare spending was bad, and I don't think Rush or sean would either.
