Uh, I'm pretty sure that has more to do with the hate between Taiwan and the Chi-coms. Hence, no direct flights between the two. I think it was just in the past year that pax flights resumed on a limited basis.

Regarding the hills in Asia: True, there are a lot of them; but most of the airports we fly in and out of are pretty close to see level. Not a lot of "hot and high" airports.
