Went of the left side of 17L about in the touchdown zone of 35R.

Yes it appears that the #1 T/R (translating Cascade) is still deployed and or damaged.(would be full reverse on aborted T.O. right?)
Also looks like a well executed high speed (Skid marks) left turn. Maybe to avoid a less pleasant looking over run (End lights and nasty Loc antenas etc) .
Or malfunction of the #1 T/R (uncommanded deploy creating some yaw moment to the left) and instead of going flying we make a left here and call it a day

That looks like a pretty sharp left turn at the end. Look at the skid marks left on the runway.

It's been a while since I have been to SDF . . so I don't remember what he might have been looking at through the windscreen right down the centerline at the bitter end of the RW.

I am thinking a quick turn into the grass was probably a good move -and it stopped him pretty quick, didn't it. On the plus side. . it was uncharacteristically (for nightflyers) light out at that time of the AM . . so he could see EVERYTHING that he might not want to hit.

I wonder if the MD-11/ MD-10 could sustain that hard of a left turn without gear collapsing?

I believe he was looking at the UPS employee parking lot directly ahead. He had a little over 1500' remaining straight ahead, and a high-speed taxiway just beyond and to the right. From what I've been able to gather, the off-road path was not a conscious choice.




Well, as much trouble as the gear seems to have staying on straight ahead....

Sure it can. We have a FIGJAM Capt who taxies that way "all the time" and the gear never collapses...

... at least not while HE'S taxiing.

But ya gotta pity the crew that gets the jet next...
