FEDEX PLANE CATCHES FIRE AFTER LANDING MISHAP

July 28, 2006 10:16 AM

A FedEx plane endures a hard landing... And catches fire at Memphis International Airport..

It happened just before 11:30 this morning. The aircraft was coming from Seattle to Memphis.

It appears that the DC-10's left gear collapsed on landing. It sustained damage to under carriage. The Airport Authority beleives a fire started on the left side of the plane. The FAA believes the fire was actually a grass fire caused by sparks in the accident.Crash crew firefighters put out the flames.

The flight crew escaped from the plane without injury.

The NTSB will conduct an investigation.

The mishap happened during a down time for the airport.. So the Airport Authority says incoming air traffic was not affected.

How many hull losses is that for FedEx? I can count at least 3 but it seems the answer is more like 5. Anyone know?

Yikes! Similar to the loss a few years ago (was it 2002 or 2003?) in MEM. I was part of the load crew that got that flight out of OAK that morning. T'was a sad day indeed

EWR - MD-11
ANC - MD-11
MEM - DC-10 & MD-11 (2)
TLH - B-727
SFS - A-300
PVD - DA-20

Probably more. . my memory is failing. . A/C 'types' may or may not be accurate.

No ANC MD-11 that I know of, but I think there were 2 mishpas in Subic. The only MEM mishap I know of was the 2003 MD-10 hard landing. DC-10 caught fire a few years ago and did an emergency landing at Newburg.

I won't attempt to argue with a retired captain--probably has a lot better data than I do...

I don't recall more than the one that went 'submarine' off the end at Subic. . BUT . . there are some great photos somewhere you just reminded me of at Manila . .don't remember if that was a 'strike', but the A-300 went off the end and across the highway.

AND. .completely forgot about the one at SWF. .the old SAC base at Stewart, NY. That one caught fire in flight and the captain, a close personal friend of mine, did a PHENOMENAL job saving everyone's life. That was a DC-10, completely consumed on the runway. Shipper was responsible for that. . putting bad juju in a box.
