FDX Hiring Process Announced
#43
ID,
Put yourself in the place of the FedEx guy responsible for hiring, and then tell me how much weight, if any, you would place on a recommendation, from someone whom you not only don't know, or don't have any corporate knowledge of, but someone who might possibly not even exist? The beauty of an internal recommendation, from a currently active internal pilot, is that: 1) you have history on the guy making the recommendation; 2) he or she is willing to tie himself to you for the rest of both of your careers; 3) he or she knows that if you turn out to be a dud, that will probably be the last recommendation of theirs that will hold any weight at all.
With the above in mind, I feel that an external recommendation, regardless of who did the recommending, is of little to no value whatsoever. A number of years ago, I was shown a letter, by the chief pilot's secretary, written by a prominent member of the U.S. Congress, to Fred Smith. The letter was a recommendation for the senator's son. Needless to say it was a glowing letter, telling how this kid was god's right hand man, who helped bring up the sun, etc, etc. Penned across the top of the letter, in red ink, was a note to the chief pilot. It said: "Dear XXX, please treat this candidate as you would any other." Signed Fred Smith.

I hear ya. They SHOULD certainly weigh the internals more then externals. I have flown with my sponsor, of course!, and another guy recommending me.
Also, I'm trying to get a few letters together that are from all phase of my 121 career. When I was a FO at a regional, Capt at same regional and FO again at my present place. I'd much rather have some LORs and them not care about them, than have them wonder why I don't have ANY from people I have flown with, other than FDX guys. I'd rather do too much, than not enough.
On a side note...do I REALLY need to get a new FEX...I have worked for a 121 company since I last took it... j/k!

Question about the application. I know three guys who are all sponsoring someone else, but I believe will write a letter of rec. I contact the first of the 3, and he says he's happy to help, but can't submit the letter of rec. until I get a sponsor because the system will kick it out. On the app. under recommendations, there's space for 3 Fedex employees. It asks for their employee number and last name, and doesn't break it down by recommendation or sponsor. Can someone shed some light on this? Is he able to submit a recommendation letter without me having a sponsor? Tks!
