Not sure if you're a history buff, but Patton is buried in Luxembourg....short train ride from saarbrucken or trier if my memory serves me correctly.

There's got to be some Viper guys lurking with advice on where to go. Either way, it's Germany. Find a bar and drop anchor!

To be honest, there isn't a ton to do in winter at Spangdahlem on a 22 hour layover. If you rent a car, it opens up some very good possibilities for a day trip.

The hotel we normally stay at is very isolated, but the restaurant is good and the beer is cold.

I was just stationed there. Great place, but if you don't have a rental w/gps, the taxi may get expensive. The train system works well between cities, but takes a few times to streamline that travel process (22 hours may not be enough). Considering that, here are a few of the places I have been and highly recommend:
1.5 hrs away:
1. Hamm American Military Cemetery:
50 Val du Scheid L-2517 Lux

30 min:
2. Cochem Castle (located on the Mosul river...great wine to buy!):
Mosel Promenade 16, Cochem

30 min:
3. Wine! Go see Ernie Bollig in Trittenheim. He is the provider of squadron wine. It's along the Mosel close to Cochem. Careful on the amount of wine you taste...
Weingut Ulrich Bollig, Spielesstrasse 33, 54349 Trittenheim.

5 Min:
4. That should get you going. You can wrap up the trip with some good food in Binsfield (borders Spangdahlem AB). The name of Mr. Gianni's place is called Isola Bella Ristorante.
Bahnhofstrasse 27, 54518 Binsfield

Prost!
