Quote: It's happened to me twice in the last 5 months. Not due to a d-bag Capt, but the Air France O2 configuration. Fair enuff. Lost a $7k trip over it.

Fact is the 777 is, to me, an unreliable commuting vehicle at this point. It's great it carries more freight and is more profitable, but there are generally no backups. Get bumped...you're toast.

Which is why I now BUY tickets out of my d/h bank to the max extent. I use it all. No more commuting on the company and turning some of those $ back in like I used to. Airline reliability is higher if you can believe that.

Nice airplane, but I avoid it now.
Just curious, but where were you jumpseating to and from when this was happening?

I concur...there are only two AF airplanes with the dixie cup O2 masks. But if one ends up on your flight, and it's double crewed, you're toast.

I'm not trying to justify anyone's actions...Just telling you that a 727 or 777 Capt doesn't have to explain to anyone his reason for denying a jumpseater.

That's the PIC authority, without having to explain to mgmt, that WE have.

Standing by for all the chest thumping...
Precisely the point we were tying to make BB. We are in violent agreement.

Captain exercised his prerogatives as outlined in the FARS and company flight manual to deny a jumpseater.
Prevailing wisdom here is he made a bad decision.
No one has heard his side of this matter.
Over a hundred opinions expressed on this website.

Time to move on.
Regardless of his reasoning or rights as outlined in the FAR's, the jumpseater had emailed the Captain well in advance and asked for permission to get a ride. As Captain, have the decency to let the jumpseater know he will not be allowed to ride prior to the showtime of said jumpseat.

You were? We are? OK

But, just to clarify...We only have unquestionable "PIC jumpseat authority" over seats designated as cockpit jumpseats. If a PIC bumps a jumpseater off the cabin seats of 757, A300 or MD11, he's required to explain his justification in writing, to the VP of Flt Ops.

And that kind of concession is exactly what is trying to be avoided.

PIC of a passenger airline has J/S authority whether its a cockpit sit or a cabin seat, should be the same for a freighter...

We already tried to avoid it. Some people think we won that battle. I think we conceded.

Agree 100%. I'm on board that it was a sh!tty thing to do and poorly handled. It would be nice to know if there were extenuating circumstances that we are not privy to before we hang and quarter a fellow pilot.

The captain probably doesn't check his FedEx email on his days off. He probably read the request the day of the flight.

Bingo. All the more reason to let the jumpseater ride.
