Pilot to jumpseater "dude, get up and move to cockpit I need to try and nap"
jumpseater "no problem, just tell me where to sit...sir"

Wow what a difficult conversation. I've been asked to sit in the cockpit seat all of the way to Europe a couple of times for crew rest reasons. Didn't bother me or any of the crew. I was uncomfortable, but that is part of the deal, so what.

This is amazing (embarrassing) that this is even an issue. Have some stones and pre-brief that the crew has priority and will ask you to move at some point. No commuter would have a problem with this policy. I'd gladly be woken up multiple times to save $1100!

You can flame away if you wish...If I'm operating a double crew pairing (and assuming I don't have an AF aircraft) I'm going to allow 2 jumpseaters. My priority is to take care of my crew. I'm not going to force them to be in the bunks or in the cockpit seats. There are 4 seats in the back and as far as I'm concerned, 2 of them are for the off duty crew, whether they use them or not. So, double crew, I'll take 2, single RFO, I'll take 3, non-augmented crew, I'll take 4 (maybe 6). If you email me I'll tell you within 24 hours if there is a problem...sorry I can't force the other captains to show the same courtesy.

Now, all that being said, and I've been on the jet for more than a year, I have NEVER had to say no to a jumpseater because we had too many people on the jet. Even going to ANC, it's just not an issue. (I think on most nights we have at least 3 jets going to ANC.)

Personally, I've never had a problem with determining who was the PIC on double crewed leg. Up until the end of this month it was simply the senior captain. Pretty easy to figure out. I've also never had an issue in asking a relief captain to do the preflight if he was the RFO.

Maybe some of you guys have had bad experiences. I'm sorry to hear that. But maybe some of this is the usual BS that gets all blown out of proportions. Obviously, I don't know.

OK, flame away. I'll just be another A**h*** 777 captain.

If I'm jumpseating all I need is a seat for takeoff and landing. If the captain said the crew needed the seats and I had to sit on the floor, I would not care. I'm saving money, getting to live where I want, if an uncomfortable flight is the trade off so be it. Bottom line, if there is a seat take a jumpseater. Worry later where they are going to sit/lie/stand/etc to stay out of the crews way.

I realize all 777 pilots don't fall into this category, but do guys already have the overinflated ego before the get to the 777, or does it come after they are checked out on it?

MacGuy2 06-17-2011 05:48 AM

I guess if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen...so I'll get out.

MG2

PS 1st, I waited until I got on the 777 to get my over-inflated ego.

Bunks or cockpit seats are the ONLY choice for MD-11 crewmembers on 4-man crew flights and we manage somehow. Suddenly this is unacceptable for a 777 crew.

You said yourself, it's not going to happen very often which is even more reason to suck it up for one flight and get your co-workers where they need to be.

PicklePausePull 06-17-2011 06:34 AM

You in fact do need to justify your behavior because it is not the normal behavior expected in the long haul world. FBH has it right! The "Taking care of my crew" line is pure BS.

Another reason why many of us have stayed away from the 777: full of FDX's finest "One Ways." The 777 snobbery is choking us. Reference the South Park episode on Hybrid cars. Substitute 777 drivers for Prius drivers.

finedavefine 06-17-2011 06:49 AM

P Cubed,

It's a good thing that you're not generalizing here. However, that said, I agree that there are some real tools on the big jet, but that's not to say that the other jets don't have theirs also. As well, whom do you think MG2 needs to "justify his behavior" to? You; me; Pro Standards; his ACP; who? Is he not acting within the scope of his responsibilities, regardless of what a "normal person" would expect?

MG2, do the right thing and if you've room on your jet, allow others to use the space. Even your own crewmembers will appreciate your thoughtfulness. And as a senior guy, you'll lead by example, which is what senior guys are supposed to be doing.

Heard a story the other day about an Eastern flight back in the day. XMas eve, leaving JFK with a full load to MIA. Packed with people, and the Capt allowed 7 jumpers to board. 2 stood in the cockpit, and yes...1 guy stood in the lav for T/O & LDG. All to get fellow pilots--of various airlines--home for the holidays.

I cannot believe we have people here that even make this conversation necessary. Wow.

Most guys are of the feeling that they would stand in the lav if that was the price for the ride. Some might step off the flight if told at the onset "Hey, you are welcome, but make sure you adjust to the operating crews needs" if they felt like they would rather pay the $1000. I have never had a problem with JS guys, they all have just wanted to stay out of your way anyway. All they want is the ride...
