Nice trip rig here plus a great hourly rate (to go up even higher with current contract in negotiations). I'm senior enough to bid trips that begin, end and layover near hometown. I love my job.

I went to public high school as well as a state university.
What math curriculum did I miss?
336 hrs/mo x 12 mo/yr = 4032 hours away from home each year.
(and I am not compensated for 4032 x 100something/hr I can assure you)
That's more than 1 standard devation away from the low 1000 number the article uses....

And he should! What about lateral movements(or lack there of)? What about loss of medical? What about the ultra-high divorce rate. What about violations, about cost of certificates? Etc, this is a joke.

Every industry has its issues. Most people who travel for work don't get paid extra to do so (military, sales, consulting, tech rep, just to name a few). You might get perdiem for the day but after you do what you are there for most jobs don't pay you extra to sit in a hotel room at night. I travel about 80 days a year at my current job and don't get a dime over perdiem to do so. I knew this going in and still took the job so I don't complain about it. Also many fields have required certs, extra training, yearly requal of some sort etc....
I think it is just human nature to complain. There are guys making $200K a year that are mad that they aren't getting $225K just as there are guys making $18K complaining that they aren't making $200K. Bottom line is that you knew what the pay, hours, etc. were going in and you took the job. While yes you can try to improve it but you have no right to complain about something you willingly excepted. Now if you already worked there and things changed for the worse, then complain away. Its like giving your wife permission to have an affair with the pool boy while you are gone and then being mad at her for doing it when you get back. If you don't like it, then don't agree to it to begin with.

+1 on this point. With the Internet, it's easy to get a view of what it's like to work in a certin industry. Go in with your eyes open.
