FedEx Simulators
My airline, World Airways, will be using the MD-11 sims at FedEx until the former Delta sims are moved. I was wondering if I could get any ideas for food, beverages and fun aound the school house area. We will be staying at a hotel around the airport.
Thanks

I did my WOA DC-10 Fe sim training in the FedEx facility in Jan 2008 along with recurrent in 2009. There is a sandwich place across the street we used once when the sim went down for 3 hours. But not much else around to get to without a car. My instructor(s)always offered to have us tag along with them to dinner or whatever. The hotel had beer and appetizers in the evening for all the guests. The World crews always made an appearance if they weren't going in the box. There are some restaurants within walking distance from the hotel along with a Whole Foods type store for Deli sandwiches etc. Can't remember the name of the hotel though.
I trained with Frank, Ed and Ron, a real pleasure! Three different styles of instruction but they were all great to work with!

You evidently did not stay at a hotel near the airport, and the MD11 sims are not on the same property that the DC10 sims that you trained in are located. If your company cannot provide you with a hotel in a better locale, and transportation to and from the sim, then you will be SOL. You would be better off living in a van, down by the river.......

There is a cafeteria downstairs in the MD11 sim building (we call the building AOTC) - open during lunch time for sure - not sure of the exact hours - decent food - short-order line, salads, sandwiches, pizza, etc.
The AOTC building is in a FedEx compound on the west side of Airways Blvd (west of the airport) - I'm not sure if hotel vans can pick up or drop off at the AOTC building inside the compound or not?
If you have wheels, you can go outside the compound to eat but not much of a choice immediately outside the compound near the airport except standard fast food.
10-15 minutes drive can get you to either Southaven (to the south) or southeast part of Memphis (to the north) where you might have more luck finding better restaurants/bars.
If you don't have wheels, it's gonna be tough - cafeteria and/or hotel bar/restaurant and/or walking (YIKES!!)
Good luck.

Yes the hotel van can drop them at the gucci bldg, at least they have dropped me. Once the kid driving the hotel van only had an expired learners permit, the gate guards didnt let him on property and made me hitch hike.
Both hertz and enterprise are fairly familar with fdx pilots and sims and offer us a good deal. Tell them you are training with FDX and ask for the FDX pilot deal.
Search this forum for mem rental car. While you are at it search this forum for Mem airport hotels to see if you can find any info on your place.

You'll really want a car. World will be using 'A' periods (4-8 am sim time). Sucks for you guys, but we won't be doing them for a while. For those that don't know 11S1 is now officially shut down. If Fedex Training increases you can expect to see A-periods our future. As long as someone else is using them we won't. Go World.
The cafeteria will be open for breakfast.
I would definitely recommend a rental while your here. There is nothing around the sim building that you can walk to. If you head south on Airways you can find some pretty good places to eat. Jim Neely's Interstate BBQ on State Line road comes to mind.
If you want some more info PM me.
