i've had the swissgear backpack. while it is definitely sturdy, it seemed big and fat, even with nothing in it. good backpack but just lots of padding.
i switched to the targus citygear backpack. love it. very comfortable and not as bulky as others but still holds a ton. great organization pockets. i got mine from amazon.
welcome back!

Maybe I missed something, how are you guys getting away with not removing your laptop for TSA? Im a backpack user and it has never mattered how I transport my laptop, I always am made to take it out.
Whale, great to see you are coming on line! Very happy for you, so I guess our unplanned deviation enroute to the interview didn't cost us the job after all!

As your fellow FedEx'er seemed to be posting links for professional briefcases or full on backpacks; I figured I share mine. I've been carrying a standard, college style backpack for my laptop, for about 12 yrs. High Sierra off the discount websites; offer an inexpensive alternative, great construction/materials, lots of pockets/zippers/clips, padding and ventilation. They don't last forever; but, as my company has all our Pubs/Jepps on the aircraft and I carry all the pubs I need on a thumb drive, it's all I need. All I carry, is my laptop, personal headset and plotter in the backpack (but then, I work at a ratty, ACMI cargo carrier - you may need to those cute little briefcases to look the part!

As a longtime backpack carrier (one strap only) I have recently gone the route of the messenger bag based on that earlier thread about the Timbuk2 bags. Got this one (in black, not tartan): Command Messenger - Timbuk2 Bags
Love it so far - big enough to carry around all the junk that seems to accumulate and the don't-have-to-take-laptop-out thing is fantastic. TSA hasn't blinked about it once. It slips easily over the handle of any rolling bag and I have to admit I almost feel like a grown-up without the backpack. But they'll have to tear the parka from my cold, dead hands!!
