Crystal City, Pentagon City, Old Town Alexandria, or Roslynn are probably better places to stay, as they all have easy access to the subway. To get to IAD you could either rent a car or take one of the Washington Flyer shuttles from DCA. Or skip IAD and just go to the main NASM downtown.

I would recommend not trying to do both the main nasm and the annex unless everyone in your party is really into aviation as much as you probably are. You can spend a whole day at each, and to most people, that is too much. If you are just going to do one, do the main one downtown.

Thanks for the great suggestions. My partner IS an aviation junkie and we've done the NASM on the Mall. That's why I was thinking of staying out toward the IAD area. The other place we wanted to visit was Arlington...just because.

I just went to udvar-hazy last week. I definitely recommend doing a tour there. Very interesting. They have one every hour or so starting behind the sr71. Free and informal, you can walk away if it doesn't interest you, but the docent that I had was really knowledgable and interesting.
