Signing Bonus

Signing Bonus
First of all, I know why it is called a signing bonus instead of retro pay. My rant is that if it is a signing bonus, then why does someone who was on disability for a portion of the ammendable period get penalized? It is not based on work you did according to the company, so why is it treated that way? Also, if it is a signing bonus, it seems to me that the name suggests that there was a choice that each pilot made to accept this contract. If that is the case, then why do non-members get the signing bonus? It would have been nice for the NC to exclude those who had no choice in the ratification of the contract.
Just something to think about next time .

Had a very interesting conversation in the computer room in Subic several months ago with a senior MD-11 Captain who pointed out that if it was a true retro pay and in looking back at how much work he worked since the date the old contract went void then his bonus would be around 120 thousand not the number that it turned out to be..........................

Hey trashhauler: Just passing on what was said to me. As I thought his point was interesting in that if the retro pay was a true retro pay then it might pan out to be more than the current BONUS pay. Please don't **** in my beer. I never flew a draft trip and enjoyed every one of my 29 days of vacation.

You guys made the same mistake at FDX as we made at UPS, except your bonus is half what we got! No retro! Worrying about the fairness of how the bonus is distributed is missing the mark! You ought to be more worried about how we all are going to deal with the precedent that we set by giving up such an important cornerstone of negotiations.
you guys were out longer than we were and your raise was higher because your rates were lower than ours..thats why your bonus was bigger...no such thing as actual retro...i know of no airline that redid their taxes for "retro" checks..call it want you want..it is a bonus unless the company redoes their taxes...i would be interested if u know of an airline that did...money is money...

The point that I was making is that even though the comapny calls it a signing bonus because of the current tax laws, they treat it as retro pay towards anyone on disability during the ammendable period, based on how many months of the 29 ammendable months they were on active flying status. If it has nothing to do with back pay, then it should not matter if a pilot was on disability from jan 05 - jun 05. The other point was that if it is a signing bonus, then the pilots who had a right to vote on the contract are the signees. Not the non members who are just along for the free ride.

Sorry, breaks of commercial aviation. I'll buy you a beer sometime!
