Take a look at Consumer Report. You may have to go the the library to find the most recent write up on laptops but they did do one with in the last few months.
Macs were rated very high in each of their catagories.

Screw Macs. (now that that nastiness is over) I also recommend Toshiba. I just bought this one. http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/...97&coid=-31396
I particularly like the finger print reader. It is great not to have to enter all those user names and passwords. One swipe and you are logged in. I will never buy another laptop without one.
This laptop is built for punishment also. Shock resistant HD with inertial sensors to park the HD arm when it senses being dropped. Magnesium case, spill resistant keyboard, and a small 12" 16x9 screen.
I love it.

I have used mac, BTW, but do confess I don't know the OS very well. Can you buy a 6 button mouse for a mac? I've never seen someone using a multi-button mouse on a mac. I can't live without my 6 button mouse. If you have not used one, you don't know what you are missing. Also macs have less software available and cost more right? If you say, "They run windows." I'll say, "not very well." At least I know they don't run games very well. (no I don't mean scrabble)
