Default Suggestions 4 dealing w/insecure Capt

Fellow APC'rs,

have to cope with flying with a Capt I avoid since he is the Plague so, looking for humorous suggestions to get me through the week.

Why to avoid you ask? Well, he's so insecure that any question or communication outside the cockpit is an abrogation of his Capts authority. For example, acknowledging any ACARs message is a violation of his authority-last time I did it resulted in a 5 minute redfaced profane and obscenity filled rant. Or, another example, during what I thought was going to be the last trip I flew with him (resolution following the 5 minute rant BTW, "it's only 1 more leg you can cope"). But I digress, so, we were landing in EWR, his leg. He briefed his desired taxi routing into parking....so, after landing I requested said taxi routing and was approved by ground....which was a good thing because another 5 minute rant followed my communicating outside the cockpit without his express permission. I guess I was supposed to wait until being expressly told to request X, Y and Z into parking with ground. Might have been a Catch 22 scenario though....would be quotes "why didn't you request that taxi routing I briefed you on prior to top of descent-you think I'm just talking to hear myself talk, when I brief you to do something you do it Mister"

UNFORTUNATELY, double DH trip that I had to purchase NR tickets for so dropping it just isn't an option-damn the luck

Sounds to me like you are getting sick at your stomach just thinking about it! (After the first leg of course.)

Approach this captain VERY slowly. Do what you can to appear as small as possible and hopefully less intimidating. But, remember to stay attentive. Do not get down on your hands and knees, it will make it harder for you to get away if the Captain decides to attack. Only come within 10-15 feet of the him in the crew room. That is, until showtime. Then, call to him in a soothing voice and try to get him to come to you. Put out your hand, gently pat the ground, you can also toss the captain food. But, throw the food to the side and not directly at him.

Avoid prolonged eye contact. Look to one side of the captain, rather than staring him down. Most Captains consider this to be a sign of domination. They interpret it as a kind of challenge and it can cause the captain to think you want to fight.

Good luck.

I'd make it a contest to see how quick I could acknowledge the ACARS messages.

Bingo! If he is that much of a POA, I'd suggest a call to Pro Stan.

First profane-filled rant = call to pro standards

Second one = call to CP office

You don't have to take that crap from anyone just because they've been at the company longer than you.

Our Pro Stans chairman is a great problem solver.

Well, pretty sure the company is aware he's a piece of work since he was "fired" from his LCA job.

Not sure about how well the Pro Stan approach would work-re the LCA job, he described the last guy who had a run in with him as having issues with him since he's a non-union guy as well. He didn't quite seem to get it when I said I thought KT was a non-union guy too.....

But, can't teach someone who's not willing to learn. It's amazing how many women he gets involved with-briefly-who turn out to complete Beatches....couldn't possibly be him of course.

Like the treats idea-maybe I can find something really sticky so he'll be quiet.

On the bright side, now I don't have to worry about picking a food type\restaurant time

Similar story ...

I once flew with a Capt. that included as part of his briefing that, "If ATC asks if we have traffic in sight, we don't have it until I have the traffic" (I just assumed that there must have been a story behind this statement?).

So ... when he came back from the lav, I advised him that ATC wanted us to start down but that he wasn't available at the moment and that I woud need to check with the Capt. first!*?
