Yeah..the Two Bears makes me laugh...

When I was in the 43rd FS at Elmendorf, we were in what is now the Cope Thunder building. Someone put a picture of two bears mating in our bar. Later--from a TDY...someone added a similar picture of some tortoises. Not to be outdone, someone later added more animal pictures in similar poses..

When we started using our ACMI facility up there for some real time RTO duty, we needed the RTO to have a callsign. So--on a whim--we started using "Two Bears *******ing", shortened of course to "Two Bears". As far as I know, the nomeclature for RTO work out of Elmendorf is still the same.

So--whenever I fly that 727...I laugh a little. I wonder if that little boy or girl knows that Bears is really his/her middle name, and his/her ltrue ast name is "*******king".

Names are from FedEx Express employee's children only, there is an age limit, like 12 (or somewhere around there) so you must submit the child's name before he/she turns 12. Once entered, a drawing of some sort occurs when it comes time to either paint the A/C or when a new A/C is aquired. If that name has not been taken, then the name goes on the plane, and remains there for as long as the employee is employeed with FX. I think the child gets some kind of certificate or pamphlett about "their" plane. I have noticed some -11s with no names on em, wonder whats up.

Subject: PRINT THIS FORM FOR A/C NAMING

From the early days of FedEx, it has been a tradition to name the company's
aircraft for employees' children. No other airline does this.

In addition to needing names for newly acquired aircraft, existing aircraft
are being repainted with the new corporate identity. If the name on the
aircraft being painted belongs to an employee who has left the company, a ne
name will be drawn.

All past entry forms will be discarded. Therefore, you must submit this new
entry form even if you have sent one in previously.

Following are the guidelines for the aircraft naming program. Read them
carefully and if your child qualifies, print and complete the form below and
send to Employee Communications.

GUIDELINES FOR THE AIRCRAFT NAMING PROGRAM

1. Names selected for aircraft will be limited to employees' children under
the age of 12.
2. Selection of aircraft names will be done, as needed, through a random
drawing by a member of senior management.
3. The official form below - or a copy of it - must be used. Use one copy
per child.
4. Only single names will be used when a new name is drawn.
5. When older aircraft are scheduled for repainting, a PRISM check ensures
that it carries the name of an active employee's child. If the parent has
left the company, the aircraft will be renamed through the random
drawing.
6. The naming of any aircraft for anyone or anything other than an employees'
child must be approved by Executive Management.
7. There will be no duplication of names. If a selected name is already in
use, the employee will be notified of the aircraft's make and tail number.
8. Once a name has been selected, the employee will be notified in writing
by Employee Communications.

When I was 9E'ing we dedicated #100 as Spirit of Beale Street. Great ceremony with a former Tuskeegee Light Col. in attendance. Of course whenever I flew it, it just reminded me of puking behind the Have a nice day cafe(after looking at my most recent paystub of course ).

Is there a connection between Beale Street and Tuskegee that I'm missing?

what I got from the wikipedia...

On July 18, 2004, the 100th CRJ was christened the 'Spirit of Beale Street,' in honor of a WWII bomber that was paid for with funds raised by the African-American community in Memphis.

So to answer your question Tony, no.
