Default Hug Your Meteorologist

UPS, FedEx meteorologists get your packages to you on time - Life Inc.

I'd like to use this opportunity to thank everyone in getting my packages to wherever they are going right on time. As a prolific online shopper (yes, I know I should get out more), I am addicted to the dopamine high that comes when I hear the FedEx or UPS truck pulls up and the guy/gal rings the doorbell. Even my dog has learned to recognize the sound of the trucks and the footsteps.

It was my experience over the years at FedEx, that our meterology department had the "rose colored glasses" for weather forecasts. Most of the time they were overly optimistic. Common joke was "It was the best weather money could buy." Between temporary conditions and intermittant conditions, they could usually get you legal to at least go take a look. However, when they said it was going to be bad you sat up and took notice.
At the other extreme are the clowns at the Weather Channel. Every day is a potential disaster for them. They don't seem happy unless there are hurricanes, snow storms or the infamous "Torcon" (whatever that is).
There is a local weather guy here in Memphis, Dave Brown on Channel 5, who seems to split the difference. I used him a lot to temper the FedEx forecasts. Dave would even question the National Weather Service when they would issue a severe thunderstorm warning for a particular cell. However, when Dave said it was going to be bad, we would duck and cover.

Purple and Brown weather departments are there to help retain reliability and to save money that's already been spent on their services. The Weather Channel only makes money when they have lots and lots of viewers. They basically have be sensationalistic. The weather segments on some local channels are worse than TWC. I remember one local news channel that had STORM WARNING in a big red box at one upper corner of the screen. It's just what they called their weather segment, had nothing to do with actual current weather. But until you were onto it, it got you to stop at their channel for at least a second!

The Weather Channel used to be great until they were bought by NBC. It used to be like MTV was when they played music. Now TWC shows everything but weather. They fired all the good meteorologists (save for Stephanie Abrams...mmm...Stephanie). I'm sorry, if your entire morning features Al Roker, you no longer can report the weather. They now show mostly documentaries on the Coast Guard. I'm sorry, but bring back Mike Siedel, Warren Madden, Nicole Mitchell, Heather Tesch, Sharon Resultan and of course, Dave Schwartz, my friend. I'm very unhappy with the new Weather Channel.

I'm just glad that since the meteorologists are delivering the packages, my services won't be required and I can go home for Christmas!

Perhaps weather reporting will evolve in the way that news reporting has .... we'll have Fox Weather competing with MSNBC Weather, each giving a completely different forecast.

Her head is blocking Seattle, but having lived here for so many years, I can say that when it's 102 in San Antonio, it's probably 65 here.

Now what does all this have to do with the thread, I have no idea, except it's time for more eggnog.

Merry Christmas everyone. We are off to Ocean Shores again this year on the 25th.
