The hotel thing was designed for the 1 day subs. You get into MEM and get subbed for your next trip but have a trip on the following day. No time to go home and no trip to fly. The company picks up the tab for your hotel so you are in base and rested for your next trip. If they keep subbing you they just get to buy more nights in the hotel.

I asked crew expense about this and they said I couldn't do that in my circumstance. They said one day trips aren't covered. It is designed, for example, you have a 70 hour trip. You get assigned two out and backs. They would cover the hotel between the two out and backs. They said a one day trip without an assignment isn't covered. This probably needs to be worded better in the next contract.

And if you have a long sub, if you don't want to go home, a you can ask the scheduler to build you a hotel stby pairing and get a room that way also. Not sure why you would want to though

I had this scenario last spring. I had a block turn back on an afternoon trip. No trips to sub me onto. I had an afternoon trip the following day. First, I called scheduling to ask about the hotel provision in the contract. They said they couldn't help me and that I had to make the reservation on my own and then submit it for reimbursement on my expense report. I reserved a hotel and got reimbursed for the room on my expense report.
