There are some 747 nose loaders, but they require special equipment to load not likely to be found on an austere military field.
The 747 nose door opening is considerably smaller than the main deck dimensions, unlike the AN and the C-5. Lots of vehicles that would fit fine inside can't get through the narrow and low door.

With the visor up, the entry on the C-5 is ceiling to floor, wall o wall--about a 17' square with a drive in ramp. Fold the blades and H-53s went in.

They were 118'' tall with the **** removed and the tires deflated. Needless to say it is a careful dance to put them on the 747. There was also an issue with the pallets delaminating and getting stuck on the aircraft. I had this happen in multiple locations down line. Not the most fun thing to deal with. Here is a DOD approved link with one entering a 747 Maxxpro MRAP Military Vehicle Task Force Rock Photo 7

Some very big equipment makes it through the side cargo door, however, and some surprisingly long containers and pallets, too, as well as vehicles.

We hauled 5 or 6 per flight, but they went in the side door. We have also hauled helicopters, but as you stated broken down.

Why only 4? We carried 5 on every flight on our BDSF and even fit a 6th one in once to prove a point that it could be done. We had the parts that were removed in A1, A2, B1, CL and CR. The vehicles were then brought up to the center of F and staged from there. 26 straps per vehicle later we were on our way.

Because his company is smarter than our company. More trips

How come we aren't flying them back, Tom? Any inside news?

They are being flown from theater to DWC and then mostly being put on slow boats back. No sense of urgency in getting them home. Coyne is handling the logistics of getting them back. Maybe we will pick them up in DWC and start to bring them to OSN.
