Nightlife/bars/restaurants/coffee houses/old charming homes/cool neighborhoods that run-up onto the sizable Cherokee and Seneca Park system : THE HIGHLANDS (off of Bardstown and Baxter Roads).
Bit more laid back but still with some decent restaurants/good Catholic schools/enjoying a bit more appreciation in the housing market:
ST. MATTHEW'S AREA/CRESCENT HILL/CLIFTON (extends from north of Lexington Ave to a bit north of Frankfort BLVD).
Huge vintage, old-money homes where you can get almost twice the square footage for your dollar when compared to the above mentioned/near downtown and FOURTH STREET LIVE (downtown entertainment district)/a bit edgy (i.e. not sure it would be the area I'd raise my kids): OLD LOUISVILLE.

Good Luck! Louisville can definitely be an enjoyable place to live. I hear it again and again...being a non-commuting UPS pilot apparantly increases your quality of life exponentially (i.e "it's like a different job completely".)

Bashing of SDF
I Know that Louisville isnt for everyone, but Don't sit back and waylay on a town/state with some pretty good history/things about it.(Check-out Kentucky.com). HOME IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT! Frankly I would rather not have a Stuck-up Neighbor that thinks MIA,ONT,DFW.JFK is better. IF YOU THINK THAT, PLEASE GO LIVE IN THOSE PLACES! BUT IF YOU WANT A REAL HOME WITH REAL NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS, THEN THE DOOR IS OPEN! I am sorry for the tiraid, I really get upset when people bash My Home.

My Background
Tipsy,
Let see, over 8500 TT, with 6200+ jet. All civilian. Was a Marine in my past life, and I carried a M-16A2. Presently a 757/767 FO all international. Not hired yet, just swiming in the pool. I flew freight for 8 years before I jumped over to the Pax division. Would rather do box thing. Too many reasons to list.
As for the beach, that is the only thing killing me. But doing what I do, and paying what I pay to live in the NYC area just kills me to give so much to the politics and next to nothing for me.
A big change yes, but a change I think is worth it.
