On Tuesday, Delta Air Lines said it will be drop 29 flights from Memphis International Airport, unofficially de-hubbing Memphis.

It's changing to a "focus city" with approx 60 flts a day.
Not really a shocking surprise though...or shouldn't be.

That is sad news for Memphis but not at all surprising. I'm sure that closing Memphis as a hub was always part of their plan with the merger, though they said otherwise at the time. I never thought it made sense to have two large hubs, MEM and ATL, so closely located. I moved away from Memphis last year but have in-laws living there and this will make visiting family more difficult. I wonder if their decision to make this announcement now has anything to do with the announcement that the DOJ v. American Airlines case is being fast tracked this year. I bet they want to help bolster the feds case by proving that airline mergers cut flights and close hubs. While still "unofficial" I bet an official announcement will come in November.

Wait ... there was an article in the MEM newspaper during merger talks saying that ATL was full and that MEM would have to GROW out of necessity. I know I believed them, please tell me it's not true!
