Default Question for FDX folks!

Just curious how many contractors you guys use to transport your cargo? Is that even allowed in your contract?

If you look around the ramp at any of your sort facilities, how many different carriers are parked there hauling your stuff?

Seems a trend at UPS that appears to be more and more commonplace.

Thanks!

We have fairly complex scope previsions that limit contractors. Generally we only see "big" contractors during peak, and I can't remember seeing any in recent years. Some contractors flying larger craft in Europe when bilaterals limit Fedex flying, mainly flights to Britain but even these have mostly disappeared. Of course the small fleet is all contractors everywhere, even if the paint is purple. (Intra) Canadian flying is contracted. That's about the only time a Fedex painted jet is not flown by Fedex pilots.

From what can be read right here on APC, FedEx has a goodly number of contractors. By that I mean individual pilots who take advantage of the system and their fellow pilots, all for the sake of making an additional buck or three. Special deals; Bots; picking up disputed pairings on an on-going basis, etc. Yeah, I'd say that we have a number of "contractors" in our own crew force.

Goods from China come in via boat to the port in GDL vs the US. FDX then flies the goods from GDL to the US.

About 18 months ago I was doing MD-11 "B" Reserve, it seemed like there was an additional MD-10 added to GDL & MTY EVERY day. Now it's peak and the CBA permits wet-leasing this time of year.

I asked the agent what we were carrying on a second airplane every day? He said blackberrys (not sure if that meant the fruit or the phone?) and auto parts.

There is a seaport in GDL? It's hours from the ocean. I suspect raw goods are brought in, assembled, then shipped to the U.S..
