What does anyone think of the value of going to the FAPA fair in Vegas next month to sit with the UPS recruiter? I notice there is the caveat that they will not accept your resume there (fine, I've already submitted online) and it sounds like there isn't much to be gained from UPS there.
Sounds like all you do is sign an attendance sheet and talk to someone from HR. If anyone has been and had a good result, I'd love to go but if not I'd rather not burn the days at my current job.
Also, it says they are hiring NURPs there. I want to steer clear of that offer.
Thoughts?

1) My best friend went to the recent wai job fair because I told him it couldn't hurt and because of my own experience several years prior (see #2)
Granted, they wouldn't take his resume but they reviewed it and gave him pointers. They also asked if he had any recommendations and who those people were. About 2 weeks later he was offered an interview and the following week received his pool letter. (I don't like the "new" wai conference set-up but that's a different story.)
2) I went to a wai several years ago, they wouldn't take my resume but they asked me many questions regarding things they saw on my resume. They wrote down names of all the people recommending me (7 line guys and 1 mgr). The next day I was offered an interview! Yes, the next day, the job fair was on a Friday and I was called next day, Saturday! This is after me trying to get a call for literally years, close to a decade in fact. Frequent updates via fax and letters and online once they switched over. Nothing! I go to the conference and get a call the next day. Coincidence? Maybe.. I don't want to get anyone's hopes up because maybe it was a fluke, maybe it was a coincidence?
All those job fairs are very expensive and it's very frustrating knowing it might be a total waste of time and money. However, can it really hurt to show up and shake some hands? I don't know... I mean it, I really don't know. I think it worked for me and my friend but we'll never be sure if it was the job fair or simply pure luck.. I'd say if you're off and can afford it - give it a try.
PS. Those conferences are usually pre-booked and pre-paid by the airlines months if not years in advance. The organizer makes money on it, airlines not so much.

[QUOTE=whalesurfer;1844020]Well, I guess I'll have to disagree with some folks here.

Whale, thanks for the info.
Was this at the most recent WAI job fair in Dallas earlier this month?

Do what you think is best for you.
Apply EVERYWHERE!
(->> except NURP position! <<- :-( )
..and take the first job you're offered.
Wish all the hopefuls the very best. Been there - done that - hang in there - it gets better.

Complete waste of time.
Then again maybe not. You would get a true feel for this disaster when the HR rep looks at you with disgust, makes you sign a statement that even speaking to them will not further your goals to come here, and then trashes your resume all while smiling at you.
Then, when he sees you take a piece of cake the conference is offering, they will silently put your resume in "that" pile (or the trash) as he/she sees you eating the cake as an omen that you will steal from UPS.
All the while, they probably didn't even contribute to the conference in form, certainly not $, and even found some way for someone to pay them to be there.
Carry on.......

But after years of updating, faxing, etc ... the day after ONE pilot completed the online recommendation, I was called for an interview.
It was probably the first time that a HUMAN actually looked at my stellar credentials.
Its a process that isn't meant to be understood, its a UPS job. There's your sign !

Wake up! They only go to those job fairs to hire NURPS. NURPS are scabs in training. They cannot hire them without going out and beating the bushes hoping for some sleazy dick to fall out.
Steer clear of this place. Go to any of the other real airlines hiring. Y'all must be seriously nuts to consider comig to this joke.

Yeah I made $380,000 and only worked two days the whole year after all the conflict bidding and LAP. It's so awesome!
