Life at FDX in ANC
I'm looking at what I'm going to bid this spring and I'd like to get an idea of what ANC is like for a junior MD-11 FO. If I do it, I'd commute from EWR (I live three hours away from EWR).
I have a wife and two young kids (9 and 5) and I'm in an east coast AFR unit. Good or bad idea? Any feedback?
Thanks in advance.

Whatever.
I live in ANC, and commuted to MEM for year and a half while I was plumbing on the 727. Commuting sucks in general, but MEM-ANC is not a bad commute - if you do it on line and don't try to get too creative. EWR-ANC would probably be about the same if you book it far enough in advance and don't have to turn through MEM. The seats are probably more full now that more guys are commuting up here, but I never had a problem.
How Velocipede was doing it I don't know, but I know of guys that have much worse commutes just in the lower 48.
You can PM me with other questions if you're curious.

Commuting to ANC is easiest though longest, from EWR. We operate every day both ways. MEM and IND should be okay too but I haven't checked those schedules lately. Plus, ANC only has a handful of commuters from EWR so there's practically no competition for the seats.
I live in ANC now, but commuted for three years from SEA which you'd think would be easy. I quickly learned to buy tickets because I hated begging for rides, Alaska seems to always have mechanical cancels on flights that are under-booked, and there are a lot of pilots doing that commute, all have higher priority than FDX pilots.
Some seem to have great luck commuting, maybe those who don't have small kids and/or no agenda at home.
Bottom line: EWR should be okay if you don't mind the long flight (7 hours).

You might also want to grab an ANC bidpack and see what sort of lines you'll be able to hold at your seniority. What might be a tolerable commute with 1 or 2 departures a month may be an entirely different story with 5 departures in a thoroughly chopped up month.
