Question for UPS pilots
A buddy of mine just started class with another carrier (a week ago). He got called for a UPS interview today. Does anyone know how he should handle this. By that I mean, he really wants to go to UPS. He is in class and doesn't want to blow that off just in case but also wants time to get adequately prepared for the UPS interview. How long can he put the interview off realistically? Also, how should he handle it when calling UPS back as far as what should he say?
Serious answers only please.
Thanks!

Tell UPS the truth and I bet they work with your friend to schedule for a later date when he can prepare. I don't think UPS has any problem "stealing talent" from other carriers. His current employer may feel cheated and irritated when he leaves if he gets hired, but that's just bidness. That same company won't hesitate to dump him with two weeks notice when their circumstances change. Your friend should do what is best for him in the long run. Just my 2 cents, fwiw....

I think Rocket Bob has some very good points. I just wanted to add two more points. I had a buddy that started with UPS and in the first week of class he heard back from Purple and submitted his two week notice. Hey, it's part of business.
Secondly, when Buz Thompson called me for my interview on Oct 19th, I told him that I could not commit to a date in Novemeber because my current employer hadn't published November's bid results. I told Buz, I wanted to interview on a day-off rather than call in sick. When I got my November schedule the first date open was Nov 21st. I was afraid, Buz was going to say, "ahhh fergetaboutit"..but in fact, I felt he liked that I didn't call in sick to my current employer and was straight with him.
I start class Monday at UPS

I was a month into training when I got the email for a UPS interview. I was honest with Buz about not being able to get away from training for another month. He told me that he would email me with the next months interview dates a couple of weeks later when he had them available. True to his word he emailed me a list of dates 12 days later and let me chose the date that would fit into my schedule. Incidentally, every correspondence with Buz ended with him wishing me luck in training!
Good luck!
I start class Monday at UPS too!
