As part of this agreement, F9 will NOT hire cpz pilots unless it’s flow. So if you ask me, this is worse than having zero flow. Completely blocks us from going to that company unless it’s within a tiny And distant window of time. How do you know it’s per month and not per class? I fail to see a downside to this.
We are currently losing about 20 a month to attrition, out of a pilot population of maybe 675. That’s about three percent per month. That’s 36% per year. And the mandatory retirements at the majors haven’t even peaked yet. Increase that by 2 pilots a month who wouldn’t have otherwise left and we are up to 3.3% per month or almost 40% per year. Since even at the maximum legal rate of 1000 hours a year - blocking 83.3 hours a month - it will take you two full years to get the hours you need to upgrade and then the “magic” 1000 hrs of TPIC, and it’s going to take everyone some time to get through initial training, it doesn’t seem possible to do just a heck of a lot better - on the average - than that. And I’m not saying just not likely, but not really possible. And while yeah sure, not everyone leaving is necessarily going to their first choice of places to go, neither have they precisely wasted their time at Compass either. They’ve gotten in, gotten a type rating, gotten experience that improved their resume’ and left for someplace better, without spending six months on reserve not flying sitting in a crash pad someplace they didn’t want to be. And I reiterate; the mandatory retirements at the majors haven’t even peaked yet. What more was anyone realistically expecting from a regional? Seriously? If you want to actually spend a career at a regional, Republic and Skywest would probably be better bets. Compass is more of a get in and get experience and move on sort of place. |

The downside is if you are interested in Frontier, meet their requirements, but not senior enough to flow then you can't apply at Frontier and that sucks. If all they flow is two a month like TSA, you are likely to see more people hired there without the flow than with it. Frontier is hiring a lot right now. TSA had several guys with apps there who were contacted and told they could not be hired outside the flow now that it is in place. Apparently TSH put language in the contract that forbids it. If it was up to Frontier they would hire outside the flow as well, which lends credence to the view that this flow is more about controlling attrition to Frontier than anything else, particularly at TSA as we have a DEN base.

If they can't hire us outside the flow it will slow down movement at CP. I know of 2 people going there as it is, without flow, plus whoever I don't know of.

If this clears out either two or four of our most senior people who have otherwise been unable to get to a major each month it is a win for everybody beneath them which is MOST of us. Flowing 24-48 people a year WHO WOULD HAVE OTHERWISE NOT MOVED is a win for them and would increase everybody else’s chances of getting to the other majors in a more timely manner. Anybody who seriously wanted to go to Frontier and NO PLACE ELSE. could do a short DEC tour at another regional, take the bonus and the new type-rating, and be heading for Frontier shortly after IOE. This isn’t your father’s airline hiring environment. |

Except for some small fraction of our pilots who WANTED FRONTIER EXCLUSIVELY or at least one of the bases Frontier serves, it is still a positive. For those few people, it’s a negative they can rapidly overcome. |
