121 trying to get back into 91
#11
I am going to retire early from my 121 job and would like to switch to the corporate world in the RDU area. For you long time corporate guys is this a feasible idea or just wishful thinking. The only corporate type I have is in the basic citation but have not flown that for 20+ years. Any helpful ideas would be greatly appreciated.
If you have a CE500 type, then you are good to fly the every verson of Citation I,II,V, Ultra and Encore. You would only need recurrent, possibly differences. It is feasible, especially if you have some contacts. You could start out by being a day-hire SIC. The big problem you could encounter doing this is lack of recency in type, which would come from the insurance companies. However, if you were named on someone's policy, you may get to do SIC work without going to school. A lot of airplanes have only one crew, so a part-time back-up can be a good thing. Unfortunately, I have no contacts in RDU. You may want to stop by Southern Jet, one of the FBOs at RDU and pick a few brains.

Thanks! I know "who you know" is as important as "what you know" in the corporate world. I also wondered if there is a belief that 121 guys cannot adapt to the corporate climate and how do you get past that when interviewing for a job.
Please keep the info coming.

1. You are responsible for the safety of flight and customer service. You need to keep up the service from the curb at the departure airport, to the curb at the destination.
2. You may have to do less-than-glamor jobs like aircraft cleaning, stocking of supplies, catering, getting rental cars, etc. All goes back to the service thing.
3. Work shedules can be crazy. I was supposed to fly almost everday this week, and now it is down to one. It can be vice versa just as easy.
You have had some 91 corp. time it seems, you should adapt fine. What I said about the day-hire SIC deal is just a suggestion to help get a foot in a door somewhere. You may be able to get more from there.

If you have the "Scarlet 121" on your forehead, you might want to sidestep through a fractional for a year, or two. They hire a lot of 121 guys and you'll be back in the part 91. 91K, 135 world. Most of the fracs have dropped the training contract thing, so get typed, stay long enough to get some experience and then find a corporate job.

Thanks for all the info. This is really a crazy profession! It seems that no matter how much time or Types you have, you never seem to have what you need at the right time. The fractional road seems to be the way to go for starters. Thanks again!
