Life in the cockpit?
I am not a flying pilot as of yet so my questions may seem a little odd to you veterans out there. I was wondering how life is in the cockpit while you're in flight (cruising altitude or auto pilot). For example, can you is can you talk on your cell phone? Can you eat, read a book, take a nap???? I can't imagine you would just stare straight out the window for a few hours whould you??

usually we talk the whole flight, change frequencies, and sometimes hand fly the whole leg
we're usually too high up for a cellphone to work though
if we're flying over a area well known area I might snap a picture or two with my camera

Depends- do you have a cockpit door or not?
Just remember it's okay to sleep as long as you don't wake up and see the person in the other seat sleeping too (and fighters off your wing)...

Mostly stare out the window, do paper work, drink coffee, occasionally eat, listen to my MP3 player. I currently fly mostly single pilot so there's no one to talk to, I tried reading one and didn't like it, felt very disorienting to me. No naps for me, I don't trust the auto pilot that much!

At my company, we are not suposed to close the doors to the flight deck unless it is night and the light from the back is bothering us, or some safety of flight issue like that. Because of this, it can get mighty boring up front as we can't read a paper or magazine or use the I-pod. We eat on the longer legs and hopefully you have something in common with the guy in the other seat, because you are going to get to know eachother pretty well! No cell phone as we are to high (400-450). We have sat-com in the plane, but the company frowns on using it for personal calls. No hand flying in cruise because we are in RVSM airspace and our Ops Spec does not allow it. The short legs don't get as boring because there isn't enough time to sit with nothing to do.

So does the other pilot get weird if you just tune him out and listen to your MP3? I would feel obligated to talk to the person I'm alone with??? What about a portable DVD player? I guess that would take up a lot of room in such a small cockpit??
