Default The in between

Is corporate flying the job you have in between or after major airline jobs? I heard this somewhere and I was wondering if some of you could weigh in on it. I'm not trying to offend anyone but I was wondering if this is a stereotype (true or false) among the industry...

False. I have several friends who have made corporate their career. They just don't complain as much as we do

I went from a major (legacy) to corporate.

More money, more time off, better QOL... but more responsibilites-- you can fly your owner 1000 times safely at over 40k feet and 600mph, but forgetting a box of kleenex will get you fired... an unfortunate reality for a corp pilot.

Cue NowCorporate into the thread...

For the OP, I'm sure there's more than a couple major airline pilots out there that feel that way. Get furloughed, fly corporate for a few years until recall, go back to the airline, rinse/repeat as needed.

May have been that way in the past, but I think those times are pretty much gone.

That's a major contributing factor to "airline stink" in business aviation.

I certainly hope you're being hyperbolic.

Of course there are more than a few wealthy, high maintenance d-bags that own airplanes...and I haven't been in this business very long...but I've never actually met or heard of somebody being canned for trivial BS such as this.

I'm guessing such owners wonder why their flight department resembles a revolving door...

Those who left the majors for corporate say it was the best thing that ever happened to them.

Those who left corporate for the majors say it was the best thing that ever happened to them.

Clear as mud? It varies on the person, and the job. I could never see myself going corporate... likewise, my good bud who left 121 for corporate could never see himself coming back to 121 - he's got one of those SWEET corp. gigs.

What BoilerUP says is true - the days of getting furloughed and going corporate are pretty much gone. NO self respecting company is going to shell out $$$ for someone who will bail when the airline recalls.

I was being hyperbolic, but I was just saying that it usually is not the flying portion of the job that will get you canned from a corp department-- likewise, when I hear of a person getting canned from a corp job I do not think of it the same as when I hear of a guy getting canned from an airline job. Getting canned from a corporate job is usually either personality related or over something stupid- i.e. the box of kleenex!

So my saying in corp aviation is "fly the boss 1,000 times safely, but it's the kleenex that will get you!"

Getting canned from the average corporate job is actually next to impossible....aside from stealing, you pretty much cant get canned today. You are safe until its cut back time...then the losers and deadwood go first (like any industry)

And yes, I hope to build my hours up in this corporate thing so that I can apply to the "majors"........LOL....large paycut, work 3X as hard, fly with airline pilots, etc....sounds like a blast.

Some enjoy the airline life more, some couldn't fathom it...do whatever pleases you! I never understood guys who craved the other side of the fence and did nothing about it but whine and moan...get some balls and just go!....Its just a job.

It seems that it really just boils down to whatever floats your boat, er, flies your plane. Maybe this was once a stereotype but is no longer. As it seems like there are some great corporate gigs out there.

Why must people always feel the need to disagree

What? The average PART 91 gig working for a family or individual, or even for a corporation where you fly the same few around all the time... is very easy to get canned from for a number of reasons...

they just don't like you
you fly like ******
they don't like you
you make them feel unsafe
you always screw up catering
you put your foot in your mouth with passengers often
they just don't like you
you are late a few times
they don't like you
you butt heads with the other pilot
the other pilot doesn't like you
they still don't like you

Any or all of these reasons (oops, left out the kleenex!) can lead to an early and quick dismissal from an avg corp job.

Now if you show up on-time, do your job well, and are pleasant with everyone, then I would agree with you that it is more difficult to get canned from a corp job... but even with that, the boss may not be comfortable with you because you are always pleasant!! you just never know!

Two of the four of us at my corporate gig are f'd AA. So, you CAN get hired into the corp world even with furlough stink on you. Neither of us plans to return to AA; we have lucked into a very good flying job.

In general terms, two things you don't have in the corporate world are union protection and solid schedules. If those are important to you, corporate may not be your cup of tea. However, if you actually enjoy flying and want to get away from the "bus driver" aspect some may feel at the majors, corporate can be very rewarding. I have learned a ton, it IS different, but so far it has been a lot of fun. There are definitely some nightmare corporate operations out there, so choose wisely.
