We stay wherever is best within our budget....and thankfully our budget does not put us in Embassy Suites.

Those places are absurd...total white trash hotels where its acceptable to unleash your nappy brats out into the hall and consider it babysitting as you drink 30 packs of beer until the free manager special nacho bar opens up or the hillbilly wedding starts...

I despise traveling with point sluts. We just stay at the best place we can on each stop, nothing worse than driving past a nicer hotel just to get some freakin' points.

If it hosts redneck weddings, cheerleading competitions, or only has buffet meals.....we don't stay.

actually at the end of the day, points and "status" is only as important as you make them. This year I am staying at more places that are near parks, walking trails, etc.

I am staying in some Holiday Inn Express hotels that are pretty clean, and other places.

A few clowns at my place will drive 50 miles just to stay in a full service Marriott....me ? nope

Never heard of Hilton or Marriott... But among the places I've been placed at during my career... Hampton inn beats Holiday Inn Express beast Radison beats La Quinta! Hilton... Hah.... That's a good one!

I enjoy the Manager's specials in the afternoon at some like the Homewood Suites (often replaces going out to dinner) and the made to order omeletes in the morning and sit down breakfast service are very nice. Diamond status gives you a free breakfast, Gold/Silver sometimes gives you a $10 coupon at some places. I've even had the wait staff accept the coupon for the full price of breakfast. Since I am only Gold at this time but everyone I travel with is Diamond, I usually get the same perks that they get.

Overall I think that if you are staying at Marriott or Hilton properties then you are probably being taken care of pretty well. At least you aren't staying at MOTELS or places with numbers in the name!

Default Hilton

Hilton (hampton Inns) are my fav. Marriotts are OK as a second choice.

I am a Marriot Lifetime Gold so I have a little pull at Marriot, also Hiton will not give you travel industry discounts over the phone, Marriot elite rewards line will give them over the phone. Besides that they are pretty much the same.

Reminds me of the Embassy I stayed at during an initial at ILM Flight Safety for a weekend they had a hotel full of kid hockey teams. They were running all around the place, the gym, pool, and the lobby where it echos to the floors above. Ugh never again

I have to say, I've utilized both chains for many reward redemptions and have been treated excellent by both. Last rewards stay at a Hilton they upgraded my wife and to a city view and had champagne and strawberries waiting in the room (Prague)... that's what builds brand loyalty.
