IS-BAO/SMS Manager
My flight department is finally getting around to adopting a formal SMS program, beginning from the ground up. They plan to hire from within, with the intention that the pilot that is hired as the Saftey Manager work on the program while on duty, and if need be, coming in on days off to conduct business/training/meetings. (I'm interested enough to have applied because we need it, and I would like to better our department.) Mgmt is giving a small percentage raise (2-3%) for compensation.
Those of you that are the IS-BAO/SMS manager for your flight department, how are you compensated for your time and duties while performing these functions? How much time (realistically) does it take to achieve FAA Level 1 Certification?
Thanks for your thoughts!

There are plenty of 3rd party consultant outfits that will come into your department and get your SMS/ISBAO pieces put in place. See what they charge for such a service (usually an up-front fee, then a monthly "subscription") and base your price off of that.

I do similar for my charter-management company. I work for the aircraft owner as a pilot, and as a contractor for the SMS stuff. Added about 20% of my base compensation, paid by the charter company. Job is like herding cats. Lots of time spent convincing people of the value, even when they see fines or worse flying to the EU for non-compliance. Not about the money for me, but I do feel that given the responsibility, my compensation should be closer to the DO (we are 135).

Your SMS Manager position could be full time in and of itself if done correctly. I just got done with a SMS validation project of a large aviation organization that took over 2 years to complete. The company has a full time SMS Manager/Director and that is all he does. If you have not already done so, I highly recommend you contact your company's FAA POI and ask them about "SMS Voluntary Program". It is thru this FAA process that your SMS will receive acknowledgment from the FAA and be recognized by ICAO member states (vital if you fly Internationally).
For research:
NPRM 14 CFR Part 5 (soon to become rule for 121)
AC 120-92A (soon to be revised)

I am not our SMS guy, but I do have the additional responsibilities of managing our MEL's, Arinc Administrator, training and standards officer, and manage our EU-ETS program. I fly for a fortune 50, four aircraft operation flying 2 types as a domestic and international captain. I receive no additional compensation for any of what was previously mentioned.
