We go by the 2 hrs minimum to show for the rare pop ups.
Even then we only do what we can do.
I won't live with a suitcase in my car.
Luckily we only get one or two of these a year.
This is us too. 2 pop-up trips in 12 years. Both for serious emergencies.

I was corporate for almost 20 years and made the change to 121 5 years ago out of frustration with 91 operations shutting down with no warning. I am now a captain at a major 121 operation and will never go back!! Even if I wanted to my wife wouldn't let me!!! All I can say is stability...

*Bump* out of boredom.

It has all hit home at our flight dept. Very good job but the salaries and retirement are a bit weak and just can't hold a candle to a 121 career.

Lost one to the 121 world last month and I will be giving my notice this week doing the same.

I truly think corporate salaries will HAVE to increase substantially to stem the tide - but I'm not willing to wait for it (and it will take people leaving to make it happen).

Remaining stealth until I'm sitting in class...but suffice to say it is exactly where I wanted to be! Stoked!

I've gotten phone calls from 3 different Fortune 100 companies asking about how our department has effectively halted attrition over the previous 5 years. Amazing to consider that the 4 guys that left their positions averaged an age of 50. It's not just the young(er) guys leaving for the 121 world.

I would be curious to hear how you've halted attrition. Unlike some people, I'm not a "corporate" guy or an "airline" guy - I'm just a pilot. I've done both 121 and Corporate and can appreciate the different inherent advantages and qualities of each. I was certainly willing to retire from my current department if it would have been even remotely close from a financial perspective. But even though we operate large cabin airplanes, it still makes sense to go. I had one carrier in mind in particular where I've always wanted to work and that's where I am headed. (!!). I'm sure I'll miss many of the perks of the corporate job, but I am looking forward to many of the aspects of 121 flying that I enjoy as well.

(And I am pushing 50 also)

Opinion only, but corporate chief pilots are going to have a tough time going to HR for $230k-$275k for line pilots--in Fortune 500 companies that's a ton of dough. The Fortune 50, maybe, but what's that--5% of the US corporate pilots. The private equity guys can pay big money because no one is looking over their shoulders, assuming the boss wants "his guys" flying the plane. I've known a few of those, even pay commuting costs, but that's rare.

The base problem is airline-style pay is hard to justify when the there isn't the revenue stream coming from the flying.

Airplanes are spendy. Don't want to spend money? Don't fly airplanes.

Or as a mentor of mine once said...

"No bucks? No Buck Rogers"
