One thing that really surprised me about Trump and Coumo is that their pandemic briefings were laser focused on only epidemiology. In my military experience, the commander always meets with a staff of technical experts who bring a lot of unseen second and third order effects to light. Then, after weighing input from everyone, it's the commander's job to make a final decision. I'm not sure if Trump and Coumo had those meetings behind closed doors, but iIt's not an epidemiologist's job to weigh the economic consequences or even understand how the financial markets and economy work, so it surprised me the briefings largely didn't include economists, accounting, law enforcement, public works, etc.

I still think the shutdowns combined with the massive stimulus were necessary though, especially considering we still don't really know how bad this virus is. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I think the govt is largely handling this as well as can be expected, and although it seems slow to us because we're agonizing over it in real-time, they're largely sticking to the same predictable plan. I think people are being just as 'alarmist' about the fallout from shutdown as they were for being proponents of the shutdown. Everybody already knows that both are bad for different reasons. We shut down, got a better grasp of what's going on, patched some holes in the boat with stimulus, and now we're moving forward. I'm not a big fan of Trump, but I think he acted fast and decisively to prevent the economy from core-locking.

Too many dumb rules swayed by business interests and politicking to mention. Bottle shops open Tue to Sunday where I am. Yep..... Not Monday (due covid). To scary. Can go to beach. Can sit on grass or go in water. Cant sit on sand. Too scary.

After many years in the Army I often got asked...whats it like? Well, now.we all know. Many many dumb rules. I often genuinly wonder if this thing is being run by some passed over Colonels. Just retired at work, making up rules, looking busy and not really caring.

I agree. There were reports of estimates that we could have saved many more lives if we closed March 1st instead of end of March as the virus spread to the US and they knew what was starting to happen. But hindsight is 20/20..

I do not consider that to be a valid question. Effective strategy to what end? There ARE NO fixed percentages. And they answer varies within a given group due to other issues such as population density. Which goes to the point. The Draconian one size fits all policies are not justifiable. There are no sharp cutoffs. There is nothing scientific about the six foot rule any more than there is about the now thoroughly discredited 21 foot rule in policing.

WHO ARE YOU TRYING TO PROTECT? The healthy young military member? 3000 people on the USS Theodore Roosevelt got coronavirus. One (1) died from it. The “general public”? The 85 year old in a nursing home with COPD and coronary artery disease? The elementary school kid who actually DOES need an education to make his/her way in the world?

You seriously think the optimal solution for one will be an optimal solution for all?

Even by APC standards that’s a ridiculous statement. Akin to “One of my FAs said that her brother who knows a guy in maintenance says that he thinks that maybe...”

You can’t just say healthy people won’t get it or die therefore open it up. You’re dismissing all the science behind this virus. And with a country that’s the most obese and likely unhealthy in the world too. That’s not how it works. Suicide, depression, etc aren’t contagious. You can’t have an economy with people dying or being infected in mass. After all, the states that wanted to open did so anyways, we’ll see how they do.

We do know the virus dies quicker in higher heat and lower humidity conditions. That's the science that so many go on about. It's proven fact. But people still congregate indoors with air conditioning.

This is why this debate never goes anywhere... on APC, on cable news, and with politicians. All lockdown proponents have to do is say that the science is on their side, and the discussion is over.
