The cohort of that A-Z South Africa (Phase I/II) trial was VERY small...involving 20 cases in placebo and 19 cases in vaccine groups, with no severe disease noted in the vaccinated people who were infected. The data driving a thousand news stories around the interwebs is small, incomplete and not published OR peer-reviewed at this point.

But hey, at least the panic porn keeps churning...

**Minimal protection against mild and moderate illness. No word yet on protection against severe illness, which is what truly matters. However, this vaccine is very similar to that of Novavax and J&J, which appear to provide good protection against severe illness and death in the SA variant. There is a reasonable assumption this vaccine will have similar results. It appears the vaccines as a whole are still very effective in protecting people from the worst of outcomes even if new variants lower a vaccine's overall efficacy against infection.

While complete eradication of this virus is what we all want and hope for, the data is pointing to at the very least these vaccines being able to protect against severe illness and death, which at the end of the day is still very good news.

Seriously? You actually thought that was going to happen? Only one virus has EVER been completely eliminated by vaccination. That one was smallpox.

From the time an effective vaccine was found until it was successfully eliminated in a huge worldwide program with both the US, the USSR, and pretty much every other first world country contributing money and manpower was a mere 180 years....

It took right about 180 years from the first practical manned flight (in a hot air balloon) to man on the moon.

But if we decide to go back to the moon, it won't take another 180 years, we could do it in about 4 years if we REALLY wanted to.

I don't think covid is worth eradicating, just need to marginalize it. Smallpox had a much higher CFR, was often terribly disfiguring or blinding, commonly afflicted children, and had a higher CFR in babies. Covid is weak sauce by comparison.

We’ve had good polio vaccines since the mid 1950s and still haven’t eradicated polio. And we’ve got a lot more people on earth than we did back then, and a lot faster airborne vectors...

ht

and if you think WE have a rough antivaxxer crowd...

Polio and Ebola are not threats in the developed world. I don't think covid will be either.

It has arrived in the developed world several times, but has never spread. Different hygiene, social, and sexual customs.

The headline is misleading. If you read it, you think the health team was killed by the Ebola virus. If you read the article, you will read villagers used machetes and clubs to kill them. Tragic, but a whole different perspective.
