A few days ago I walked into a CBP interview location that was booked up for the rest of the year, (in pilot uniform) and the officer was incredibly nice and just took care of it then.
He said that they are going to a process that you apply on line the normal way, but instead of the regular interview there will be a different procedure. The first time you are coming back into the country they will process you as a regular person but that will also act as your interview and you will then be fully enrolled in the system. No idea when that will be effective.

I did this a few months ago. Earliest appointment I could get was 4 months out. I ended up doing a walk-in appointment at the ATL airport. I had to leave without doing interview twice due to running out of time while in waiting area. They won't turn you down for a walk-in appointment, but it could take 2-3 hours.
Fwiw, I think it's sucks how our company recommends global entry, but won't pay for it. American and United pay for it for their crew members.

At JetBlue our inflight crew get reimbursed for GE but the Pilots are SOL. Never did quite crack the code on that reasoning.

I am not getting GE. I do plenty of turns through ATL that start international. A few flights delayed while crews are stuck in customs and they will pay for it. It's the principle of the thing.

^^^Yep...check out the Mobile Pass app. It's a free download and if it works in your airport, it's often faster than Global Entry. I use it all the time and get through faster than GE users. I did get GE just for Hawaii coming from Japan...they don't have Mobile Pass yet in HI. So it saves me there. But Mobile Pass wins at all other major airports that use it.

$1.67 per month so the company can try to min turn you from an international flight to a follow-on domestic flight and not take a delay? On your dime? Have at it. I'd wait in the customs line. But that's just me. I think that's the point Klondike was trying to make.
