<From the Microsoft W-10 installation site>
If you want to install windows 10 on a new SSD or HDD, you can do so as long as you are doing it on the same PC (mother board). windows recognizes your mother board ID to verify that you are eligible for your copy of windows. If you do it on another computer or if you change mother board then the license won't activate . changing hard drive should be OK though too many hard ware changes are not advisable. so you won't run into trouble by doing a clean install on the same PC that has an activated copy of windows 10 installed.

Just keep in mind that when clean installing, you will be asked twice to enter Product key or license. First when on initial start up choose "SKIP THIS" option and when asked after installation but just before opening choose "DO THIS LATER" option.

P.S : having a Microsoft account connected to your current copy of windows 10 makes your OS validity more safe and secure.
In other words the W10 electronic license is keyed to the motherboard. There’s no need for a “product key” if the machine had a licensed copy already installed.
I discovered this bit when the hard drive on one of my home computers crashed (hard!— always back up your important stuff )
Go to Microsoft website and search for “media creation tool” and follow the instructions for “installing on a different PC”.

Disclaimer/reminder: this ONLY works on an unlocked tablet. It will not work until either the automatic reset completes, or you jump through all the hoops and get the system dialog regarding “A configuration change was requested to clear this computer’s TPM”. Until then the hard drive is still locked/encrypted.

Hope this helps.

kdobbs: That has always been the case. I used to build PC's and was authorized by Microsoft to install OS's with their Pre-Installation Kit. It's always tied to the motherboard. If you have a PC and the motherboard fails, you are SOL and will have to get a new license key. The problem with the Surface is the company has encrypted the hard drives and their process for unlocking them ( giving us admin privileges ) didn't work for many.(I am one ) I have looked at log files and they started trying to do it on the 2nd. You can't wipe the drive if you don't have admin privileges which requires ADMIN/PASSWORD ( only available from IT and ya ain't getting that) Or they have to give you the Bit Locker Recovery Key. There is another way to retrieve it and I won't get into details because it's very in depth, but I did try and unfortunately, the key was not available. My son and I have gone through some of their instructions they sent and I'm sorry but it's bad.

I don't think they will be able to give me the recovery key to unlock the hard drive, but we will see.

I guess I should go buy a lottery ticket. Mine reset at 1300 Eastern time on Tuesday as advertised. Runs a lot smoother and faster without all the Delta junk on it. I'm pretty pleased so far....
Color me surprised!
