I’ve mentioned it before but don’t forget about using the VACB provision as well. It pays more than an IVD and leaves the amount of accrued vacation days unaffected.

Not knowing about this, I clearly need to learn more.

While the number of Vacation days remain unaffected, isn't there an impact down the road when you get to your last week of vacation for the year? I believe PBS will see the number of vacation days for the month and assign the normal value for line construction purposes. When your award is uploaded into DBMS, your reduced vacation bank will be applied and you will have a short month. For example, if you use vacation bank to cover the full value of a dropped 5 day trip, your final vacation week could pay $0, but you will have the full week of hard no-fly days of vacation on your line. Is that right?

That’s correct. It pulls hours from your vacation bank but the vacation days themselves remain intact. It appeals to those of us that value time off throughout the year more than getting extra pay in a particular vacation month. It won’t appeal to everything but it’s a nice tool to have in the toolbelt. I try to use 2 to 3 VACB days in a given vacation vacation year. That puts me at “break even” for pay in a month in which I then have vacation.
