APD reset
I'm confused about when when my "old" APD expires, as evidenced by the many years APDs have gone unused for fear of inadvertently burning the ensuing APD by stepping over the cutoff. Yes, I keep mine as a silver bullet to use on a rainy day, especially because my anniversary date is in the summer, when I am always trying to maximize time off with family, if not make some extra pay. I've used only two ever, but earlier in the cycle and with satisfactory results, but with a lingering sense of anguish over an early pull of the trigger.
PWA Section 23 10 b says an APD will be granted if (among other conditions) "pilot has not been granted an APD since the first day of the bid period containing the last anniversary of his date of hire..." I'm hung up on the definition of has not been granted, much like Bill Clinton belabored the meaning of the word "is!" As in, if I were granted an APD during the PCS run that occurs at 0700 on Saturday, July 20, the transaction (i.e. grant) clearly occurs prior to the first day of the bid period that contains my DOH anniversary. I was hired on August 4th. The pairing I would want to divest happens to depart on August 27. My gut tells me the contractual language intent is to count the date of the rotation departure as the "set-point" for the APD utilization, but the language is not just unclear to me, but seemingly implicit that what counts is the date of execution. These are two points in time that can be weeks apart, and in this case five weeks, so I'm hopeful I can initiate the transaction this week relative to a considerably future rotation, and still have a new APD bestowed upon me soon. Is that just wishful thinking of my feeble legalese digestive system? Cause I want to use my APD that has been on the books for nearly 12 months, and have that APD replaced in short order for use in the next year. I will be most appreciative of explanations of how the annual APD expiration/replenishment works. |
It renews the bid period that encapsulates your hire date.
IE if you wanna use one and had an aug hire date you have to use it in July bid period. If you drop an aug trip you will not have another APD till next aug. sorry |

I think you meant to say "when does my APD reset?"
If you are implying my overall post was too long-winded, you might not be wrong. I was just trying to get my thought process and question accurately conveyed. Thanks to everyone that provided insightful answers. |
