I seriously doubt there’s even a hint of a shadow of a sliver of this possibility in the works. Especially with NK’s stock riding fairly high, Delta actually prospering a bit with the Max fiasco and NK not really competing for the same market segment with Delta.
I guess there’s the possibility of a play for airframes, gates and 2200 pilots, but buying at the top of the market seems strange unless they’re trying to force someone else’s hand into paying too much for a ULCC. Kinda like AS’s purchase of VX against B6’s bid.
NK wants to be at 300 airframes in 5 years, and there’s some rumbling about a second type being added. Likely the A220 which might be attractive if Delta wasn’t already getting smoking deals on them. But nothing in the grapevine whatsoever about this.
