Why do you think that is? They lived in an echo chamber for too long?

^^^^^ This

Just about every 330 FO I've flown with isn't going anywhere until they can move over to the left seat of it.

Can't hack the busy stuff.

It's a tough move going from "Nonstop buffet until happy hour," to "Where's my next meal coming from."

That's the thing about this career. It's all luck and timing when one gets hired. If that same 25 year old was hired now, they'd have a vastly different (albeit still good) career. And if that same guy was hired in 2000 at 25, we all know how that went.

Be the right age, at the right time, in the right place--my advice to people thinking about starting an airline career.

Agree, but I think it would probably be better than you expect. Remember roughly half of the pilots hired since '14 have been military and probably half of those are retirees who will only get 22 years or less at Delta. When the retirees start to go away the 25 year old hired today still has 20+ years to go. They won't get a decade at #1 on the seniority list, but probably 10-15 years in the top 10%. Just a guess, perhaps a 25 year old hired this year can share their seniority progression.

Nah, it's just tough to actually have to go to work more than a few days a month. :D

Exactly. I have yet to hear a good case made for upgrading from WB B to NB A. For most guys on 777 it is a paycut going to NB A. I will always remember at the beginning of my career some crusty and very wise CA said to us.... There are 3 types of pilots. Pilots that chase the notoriety, pilots that chase the money, or pilots that chase the time at home. Thankfully, this company provides whichever path the pilot wants but not all three simultaneously.

I’m not familiar with the notoriety track...

I’ll retire in the top 200, if I go to 65 (I’m trying to be done by 60) but I don’t cross inside 1000 until the last year or two.

Crappy timing notwithstanding, it’s been a privilege and honor to be a part of this pilot group. I wouldn’t do anything differently.

Agree and with similar dynamics. I was 32 when hired at NWA in 2001. It was a journey, but so is life. While some focus on green slips, or junior captain or other things, this career gives you that flexibility to mold your path. Many start side businesses or military careers in the reserves or guard.

I’m grateful I have over 14 years left and hope I stay healthy to enjoy it all and then live long after that. Many people I know do not have the luxury of our flexibility or time off or protections from downsizing as we get older.

There are many layers we have to protect ourselves from life issues... LTD to 65 is a biggie. Most in other jobs do not have that. True that we have much different medical issues to stay on the job, but we can thank ALPA for all those protections. They don’t come cheap. And we were not given them for free or out of Ma D’s giving kindness. We’ve negotiated and fought hard to keep.

When I was furloughed from NWA we were all offered free cobra paid medical (if needed) by the NWA pilots that weren’t furloughed. Not only were they looking at BK, lower pay and benefits, they covered our huge cobra payments.... Delta Pilots did the same I’ve been told. That’s huge fellas and I try to, still to this day, thank every Redtail I fly with... even though I didn’t used NWA cobra medical.

We are a family and I hope as we continue down the road we remember how we got here, how good the ride has been and to occasionally look out the window and enjoy the ride. We truly do have an awesome career. It sure beats a cubicle.

I went from mid seniority 330B to junior 320A. I can tell you I am definitely making more money I work about the some number of days per month plus or minus a day. I enjoyed both lifestyles but I was ready for a change.

As for a compelling reason, different strokes for different folks. I flew with guys on the 330 that hated it. Different reasons but some didn't like the changes to body clock or had trouble sleeping, some actually like to fly more than 1 leg a month. Others loved it and were going to retire as Fps on it.

Flew with a guy who went from 737b to 330b and HATED it! the whole trip its all I heard from him. He went to 737A within a few months of getting on the bus.

All that said I will probably go back to the 330 when I can hold Capt.
